Science Fun Facts, You Don't Know |
Science Facts, You Didn't Know ? Sunlight takes about 8 minutes & 20
seconds to reach the Earth at 186,282 miles/sec (299,792 Km/sec).
The highest temperature on Earth was 136=B0F (58=B0C) in Libya in 1922.
The lowest temperature on Earth was -128.6=B0F (-89.6=B0C) in Antarctica
in 1983.
Sunlight can penetrate clean ocean water to a depth of 240 feet.
The average ocean floor is 12,000 feet.
The temperature can be determined by counting the number of cricket
chirps in fourteen seconds and adding 40.
House flies have a lifespan of two weeks.
Chimps are the only animals that can recognize themselves in a
mirror.
An ostrich's eye is bigger that its brain.
An iguana can stay under water for twenty-eight minutes.
The animal with the largest brain in relation to its body is the
ant.
The largest eggs in the world are laid by a shark.
A crocodile's tongue is attached to the roof of its mouth.
Cheetah's can accelerate from 0 to 70 km/h in 3 seconds.
A giraffe's neck contains the same number of vertebrae as a human.
Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen make up 90% of the human
body.
Seventy percent of the dust in your home consists of shed human
skin
A cockroach can live for several weeks without its head.
The average human produces a quart of saliva a day -- about 10,000
gallons in a lifetime
Ants do not sleep.
Nearly a third of all bottled drinking water purchased in the US is
contaminated with bacteria.
Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over
1 million descendents.
An Astronaut can be up to 2 inches taller returning from space. The
cartilage disks in the spine expand in the absence of gravity.
The oldest known fossil is of a single-celled organism, blue-green
algae, found in 3.2 billion year-old stones in South Africa.
The earliest cockroach fossils are about 280 million years old.
Healthy nails grow about 2 cm each year. Fingernails grow four times
as fast as toenails.
The average person has 100,000 hairs on his/her head. Each hair
grows about 5 inches (12.7 cm) every year.
Did you know that there are 206 bones in the adult human body and
there are 300 in children (as they grow some of the bones fuse
together).

Smiler,

That raises another interesting point: since photons travel at the speed
of light, they do not age at all. For a photon, time stands still.

Well, it's actually incorrect, if you're being strict.
No photon generated in the Sun's core every reaches the surface.
They're all absorbed very quickly, and new ones are generated by the
matter that did the absorbing.
It's this process that takes a whole bunch of years to transfer the
energy of a photon generated by fusion in the core to the surface,
where it can finally travel through a bit of space.
The numbers come from calculations, not observation - mathematical
models of what goes on in the sun, based on the laws of physics as we
currently understand them (which is pretty damn well, considering how
well theoretical calculations agree with observed reality).

Not true. It has been demonstrated that both dolphins and elephants
are self-aware and recognize their own reflections.
Yes. I recall reading articles on both.

Science Facts, You Didn't Know ?
Let's make some comments and corrections.
Chimps are the only animals that can recognize themselves in a
mirror.
Last I checked, humans could do that, too. A handful of other animals
also show interest in their own reflection. Scores and scores beyond
that recognize their own reflection, but show no interest in it (my
cat is an example).
Cheetah's can accelerate from 0 to 70 km/h in 3 seconds.
0 to 100km/h (or 60mph) in 3 seconds is what I recall.
Nearly a third of all bottled drinking water purchased in the US is
contaminated with bacteria.
That's rather disingenuous. Just because something isn't sterile
doesn't mean it's contaminated. Bacteria are everywhere, and only a
small minority are a health threat to humans.
An Astronaut can be up to 2 inches taller returning from space. The
cartilage disks in the spine expand in the absence of gravity.
Anyone getting out of bed in the morning can experience the same
thing.

Any male going to bed with their wife can be 2 inches longer, well
before getting up.
