Object: semi-OT: Conspiracy theories
We've all seen and heard conspiracy theorists of any and every flavor. At the
bottom of this post, I've listed a few just to refresh your mind on the subject.
Most of us don't pay any attention to them, some of us consider them, some of us
mock them and other's actively debate them. Be that as it may, you can't deny
that we humans are a pretty cunning lot. Doubtless conspiracies of one form or
another are going on around us all the time, at all levels of society. They're
probably not anything along the lines of what some people speculate ie: "The
Illuminati" or "Alien coverup", but there most surely must be conspiracies of
-some- sort or another going on all about us.
There are conspiracy theories, then there are -conspiracy- theories. Some, like
certain JFK conspiracies, are a little easier to believe, while others - like
aliens abducting Elvis - go far beyond the pale for most of us.
All this thinking has led me to a few questions (given below my faux signature).
If it would help you to answer the questions easier if you could see a few
conspiracy theories to refresh your mind first, I've listed a few such
relatively common theories below these questions. My own answers to follow.
Thanks in any event for your time and attention. :-)

**** QUESTIONS ****
1. How entrenched in conspiracy do you believe human society to be?
2. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard, what is the most far-out,
commonly-circulated theory that you might actually consider taking seriously?
3. Slightly related to #2, what is the most far-fetched conspiracy theory that
you've ever believed, even if you haven't believed it for many years?
4. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard:
a. ...which theory would you most wish were true?
b. ...which theory do you most hope -isn't- true?
**** CONSPIRACY THEORIES ****
A few known conspiracy theories - I'm deliberately not delving into purely
-religious- conspiracy theories (i.e., "Satan is conspiring to make sure as many
people go to Hell with him as possible) because there are just too many. While
some of these have religious elements to them, they're not purely religious:
- JFK was assassainated by the U.S. government in order that his VP would take
the government into war with Viet Nam;
- We are being visited by aliens, the government knows about it and they're
keeping it secret;
- Not only that, but the aliens have Elvis;
- JFK had Marilyn Monroe murdered;
- President Bush was somehow involved in deliberately causing 9/11;
- The WTC fell because of demolition-type bombs and not because of being
impacted by skyliners;
- Gays are trying to invade our homes through our children by getting jobs as
teachers, caretakers, and other assorted positions which involve contact with
children - they want to make all the children gay;
- The Illuminati run the world covertly. Nobody knows anything about them;
- Russia & China are trying to take over the U.S. (replace "Russia & China" and
"the U.S." with the countries of your choice, and I'm sure someone, somewhere,
believes it);
- The ACLU is actively trying to eliminate religious freedom, most especially
the religious freedoms of Christians;
- Darwinists have infiltrated the scientific establishment in order to thwart
disemenation of Creationist beliefs - Creationism can't advance scientifically
because science hates God and is determined to thwart Him in every possible way;
- Extraterrestrials actively abuct people, but they stay hidden and secretive;
- Extraterrestrials wish to invade our planet and take it over;
- <feel free to add your own...>

**** QUESTIONS ****

1. How entrenched in conspiracy do you believe human society to be?

Conspiracies of one degree or another - Very. Though the conspiracies
themselves I don't believe usually get very intricate or complex.

2. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard, what is the most
far-out, commonly-circulated theory that you might actually consider taking
seriously?

That my mice are secretly plotting my destruction. Oh, sure, they may -look-
cute all fuzzy and twitchy-nosed with their beady little black or red eyes, but
I know how deceptive appearances can be...
;-)
Seriously though, I guess I would be more inclined to believe some of the
extraterrestrial theories, though not quite in the way that they are usually
presented. But I just don't think it all that implausible that "someone else"
from "somewhere else" is already here, and probably has been for a very long
time. I've no evidence, of course, just my own perception (however reliable
that may be), and I certainly don't expect anyone else to take such a notion as
seriously as I do. Skepticism is very healthy for a mind, so "doubters" are,
imho, essential to a healthy society.

3. Slightly related to #2, what is the most far-fetched conspiracy theory
that you've ever believed, even if you haven't believed it for many years?

Oy, now -that's- a tough one. I must have been in an alter when I wrote that
question because it's -not- one I particularly care to answer. It makes me very
uncomfortable. But in the interest of being completely honest, I guess I'd have
to say the alien/government cover up thing. These days, when I do contemplate
the possibility that aliens are already interacting with humanity, I find myself
doubting very much that they'd really have much if anything to do with our
government. But I was pretty much an x-files type goon for quite some time.

4. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard:
a. ...which theory would you most wish were true?

That Elvis is alive and well with the aliens, though I don't take that
one seriously -at all-. It's just that it's probably the "nicest" conspiracy
theory I can think of at the moment.

b. ...which theory do you most hope -isn't- true?

That 9/11 really -was- an inside job. I'm pretty sure it wasn't, but it
is a theory and it's out there, and I really, really, REALLY would hate the
consequences associated with such a thing being our reality.

**** QUESTIONS ****

1. How entrenched in conspiracy do you believe human society to be?

I reckon we are up to our oxers, in it, but I don't consider it serious.
As I see it, it is no more than the logical progression of garden fence gossip,
in a world made smaller, by cheap, efficient, mass communication.

2. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard, what is the most
far-out, commonly-circulated theory that you might actually consider taking
seriously?

Probably the Extra Terrestrial visitors.
Not, I might add, due to any convincing argument or evidence, offered by the
theorists, but simply wishful thing, omp.

3. Slightly related to #2, what is the most far-fetched conspiracy theory
that you've ever believed, even if you haven't believed it for many years?

I don' think I have ever believed any conspiracy theory.

4. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard:
a. ...which theory would you most wish were true?

The Extra Terrestrial visitors.

b. ...which theory do you most hope -isn't- true?

Probably the one that says that ETs have been here and that one or more
governments, or government departments, are in possession of the evidence, and
are hiding from us.
Or worse yet, they are in possession of alien technology, that could vastly
improve our lives, and they are hiding it from us.
Personally, I think that we are doing a pretty good job of improving our lives,
via our own technology.
What might be useful, would be an alien political philosophy that would allow
the WHOLE world to share in that improvement, and not just the favored few, who
can afford it.
But I ain't heard of any conspiracies, that suggest such a scenario.

That the Tobacco companies *KNEW* and hid the information from the people.
Which leads me to the skin heads who hold Hitler as a great man.
They smoke and drink, something Hitler never did and which was essentially
outlawed to the youth and strongly discourged among The True Nazi.
Which leads back to my idea because Nazi Germany published studies of the
links to cancer from smoking in the 30's.

Conspiracy is the new religion, an attempt to seek answers where
there are none and people were too afraid to admit ignorance.

2. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard, what is the most far-out,
commonly-circulated theory that you might actually consider taking seriously?

The JFK grassy knoll theory, but only that JFK was shot from
there and not by Oswald. Everything else, the "who?" and "why?"
is speculation that I won't touch.

3. Slightly related to #2, what is the most far-fetched conspiracy theory that
you've ever believed, even if you haven't believed it for many years?

The god myth. It's a conspiracy of ignorance and indoctrination
that I was subjected to but managed to extricate myself from.

4. Of all the conspiracy theories you've ever heard:
a. ...which theory would you most wish were true?
b. ...which theory do you most hope -isn't- true?

None and none. They're all bunkum, and I don't need ET to come
and save me.

**** CONSPIRACY THEORIES ****

- JFK was assassainated by the U.S. government in order that his VP would take
the government into war with Viet Nam;

More likely than the mob or LBJ being behind it, try corporate
America: if there's no war, there are no contracts, no profit.
It's far more plausible to suggest Wall Street ordered JFK by
killed than Castro. Given Shrub's complicity today and the
graft that Lockheed-Martin, Halliburton and others benefit from,
it's in their interests to protect Shrub, not shoot him.

- We are being visited by aliens, the government knows about it and they're
keeping it secret;

For ET to be here requires:
- a thinking race or society arising before us (who says we're
not the first intelligent species?)
- they have the scientific ability to detect other planets (not
just needles in haystacks, but atoms in oceans)
- they find ours and evidence that there's life
- having space travel advanced enough to use black holes or
"faster than light" travel
- a planet or source of materials large enough to make the trip
- an interest in actually coming here
The chances of finding us in the infinity of space are small.
The best chance of an alien visiting here is our first radio
transmissions (Marconi) travelling out 50 light years to the
nearest stars and the aliens leaving immediately for Earth.
Even if that happened, they're only arriving now.
ET phony, home.

- Not only that, but the aliens have Elvis;

"He was found in the toilet with his big, sweaty, king of rock
and roll ***** exposed to the world, and his final piece of kingly
evidence floating in the bowl."
- Denis Leary
Elvis is dead and should have died in 1957, as Leary also said.
Why would aliens - of which there aren't any - steal a corpse?

- JFK had Marilyn Monroe murdered;

How come nobody speculates on whether Christophe Walken murdered
Natalie Wood? She was better looking and more talented, thus a
greater loss.

- President Bush was somehow involved in deliberately causing 9/11;

Caused? No.
Knew it was coming and kept quiet? An unproven fact.

- The WTC fell because of demolition-type bombs and not because of being
impacted by skyliners;

Then somebody needs to explain the film of the second plane
crashing into the tower.

- Gays are trying to invade our homes through our children by getting jobs as
teachers, caretakers, and other assorted positions which involve contact with
children - they want to make all the children gay;

Xians are trying to invade our homes through our children by
getting jobs as teachers, politicians, and other assorted
positions which involve contact with children - they want to
make all the children xian.
It reads the same to me, except that gays aren't dangerous.

- The Illuminati run the world covertly. Nobody knows anything about them;
- Russia & China are trying to take over the U.S. (replace "Russia & China" and
"the U.S." with the countries of your choice, and I'm sure someone, somewhere,
believes it);

All empires seek to expand and all oppressed seek to overthrow
them. That's been happening since the days of Babylon.

- The ACLU is actively trying to eliminate religious freedom, most especially
the religious freedoms of Christians;

Akin to the Nazist claim of a "zionist conspiracy". You can't falsely
claim to be a victim without a falsely accused "oppressor".

- Darwinists have infiltrated the scientific establishment in order to thwart
disemenation of Creationist beliefs - Creationism can't advance scientifically
because science hates God and is determined to thwart Him in every possible way;

Yeah, and dentists should be rounded up and shot for attacking
the tooth fairy.

- <feel free to add your own...>

There's only one conspiracy that's true: a worldwide conspiracy
of greed. People and corporations are aiming to accumulate more
and more wealth into fewer and fewer hands. Everybody's working
together to work against each other. Collectivism (NOT socialism
or communism) and survival have been discarded for ownership of
property.
And there's no leadership to target or stop.

and anti-science advocate

Conspiracy is the new religion, an attempt to seek answers where
there are none and people were too afraid to admit ignorance.

What an embarrassing piece of compliant, subservient *****! The blanket
denial of all so-called 'conspiracy theories' -- and indeed the very term
itself!-- is nothing other than a capitulation to manipulative illusions
self-servingly spread by Power.
We already know that the people who make up our powerful elites go to their
own elite schools; attend the same elite colleges; join the same elite
fraternities; marry into each others' families; work in each others'
businesses; join the same exclusive clubs; eat in the same exclusive
restaurants; buy in the same elite shops; go to each others' elite parties,
and holiday in the same elite resorts. We also know that they don't have any
reason whatsoever to care about the needs or lives or rights of the
'ordinary people' that they never even *see* except on the rare occasions
that a pool needs cleaning on the weekend. Furthermore, we also have
abundant evidence that countless people in these elite groups will happily
lie, cheat, steal, defraud, embezzle, destroy, finagle, bribe, corrupt and
jerrymander *every single day of their fucking lives*, if it serves the
'bottom line' or gets them some other business advantage or privilege. And
yet the 'educated' and 'responsible' and 'sensible' and 'realistic'
anti-conspiracy mantra we continually hear you idiots repeating is
essentially the view that a few members of these wealthy elites would never,
ever, ever, *ever* choose to meet, in secret, in order to agree an immoral
or/and manipulative or/and illegal joint strategy according to which they
can carve up some other bit of the country or the world in a way that suits
them!! No sirree: they'd never do that, boss!! No way do they *ever* talk to
each other about how they can all get something they want!! They all
dutifully 'compete with each other', don't they...?!?!?
Fuckwit.
