semi-OT: fear of sabotage by mistranslation at Gitmo |

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 -- American interpreters at the military prison at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who are under suspicion of espionage may have
sabotaged interviews with detainees by inaccurately translating
interrogators' questions and prisoners' answers, senior American
officials said on Monday.
....
Anyone remember when the military fired a bunch of desperately
needed military interpreters because they were gay back in 2002?

Think military intelligence will ever connect up these two events?
Think the military will ever stop enforcing regs based on religious
tenets against homosexuality and start basing decisions on real life?

Yes.
Nobody cared. Even the 'phobes and the neo-cons couldn't
be bothered to so much as applaud it, it was such a non-event.
A friend of mine does amateur political cartoons, and I just
knew he was going to do one on this subject. What I was
hoping for was something like, I dunno, maybe a mother
over the crumpled body of her -- devastation fills the back
ground -- and an Army officer comforts her by saying, "Things
could be worse. Your child might've been saved by a
homosexual!"
Or something like that. He wimped out though, came out with
this:

It's the Confederate mentality that the GOP is spreading through the rest of
the military. They would rather lose the war than admit to the mistake.
I am certain that Osama jumped for joy had he heard of the military's decision
to can the "Monterey Nine." For any military to dispose of a valuable and
expensive asset during a time of conflict is gross incompetence and the officer
which made the decision to do so should not only be cashiered but
court-martialed.

To be honest, and this is no doubt my distrust of the Bush Regime speaking here, I expect that the
"espionage" in which Yee (the Muslim chaplain) and this translator were engaged in was nothing more than
delivering documents proving that the internees are being mistreated or held under false pretenses. There
can be no other reason why, after working at Gitmo for so long, the "treason" of these two men -- who have,
no doubt, *always* been under close watch -- should suddenly become an issue.

That's been openly speculated in the press... assuming they
had nothing more to go on than naked specualtion (which
maybe I shouldn't assume).
Not that the lunatics need yet another motive, but arresting
these people does add to the "Holy war" mentality, the
good-Christians against the evil, slime sucking Islamic
barbarians.

Yeah, and did you ever notice that the name Rush is just one letter off from
Bush. And the letter that's different only requires a single line under the
R. Coincidence? We all know that there are no such things. How about
blowing the lid of of this conspiracy for your next investigative report.

Are you trying to say that the military *doesn't* shoot itself in the
foot almost every time it pulls the trigger? :)
