semi-OT: The DUMB - uh, I mean DOOM - movie |
It was...okay, and that's the best I can say about it. The
three minute "first person shooter" scene is fun to watch,
but if I want that, I can play the game on my laptop.
"The Rock"...does that name refer to his head? Why not
call him "The Log" since his performances are so wooden?
Karl Urban made for an sympathetic hero (Sean Bean would
have been better), and Rosamund Pike is yummy (the sibling
substory was better than a quickie love interest), but the
rest of the cast is unknown and unremarkable.
Worse yet, the plot borrows from every "Let's not do that
because it's the safe thing to do" moment from every bad
sci-fi movie you've seen.
Nothing was new, the computer effects were the same as any
other recent movie...scratch that. If you want to see a
good "DOOM" movie, rent "Resident Evil" again. The CGI
effects in "DOOM" sucked: the monsters were as bad as "The
Hulk" and the BFG animations were less realistic than "Die
Hard 2"'s explosions.
To keep this semi-on topic, noticeable by its absence was
the satanic elements of the game, replaced by a god-bot
marine and genetic engineering gone wrong. As an atheist,
I can't decide if that's good or bad.
