Object: Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act
You know things are getting out of hand when a leading Democrat begins to
call for decency and family values to be injected into television
programming. The party that usually promotes and protects these deviants is
now taking the lead in trying to curb their excesses. Talk about irony.

Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act
If the industry doesn't take significant steps to make it easier for parents
to control what their children view on television, Congress will step in and
legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a
speech Wednesday in Washington.
"The amount of questionable content spilling across our screens is growing
by the year," Sen. Obama said at a press conference to release a new study
by the Kaiser Family Foundation that says the number of sex scenes on TV has
been increasing dramatically over the past several years.
"Once again, we find ourselves asking those in charge to serve the needs of
a nation that has a higher calling than simply peddling indecency and
materialism for profit," the senator said.

Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act

step in and legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack
Obama, D-Ill., in a speech Wednesday in Washington.

Every TV made in the last ~10 years has the ability to block programs
based on content. It is the most unused feature ever put on a consumer
electronic device. Barack should stick to giving hell to the GOP and not
worry about TV shows.

Well, didn't take long for Obama to turn into a typical, opportunistic
Congresswine...

Anybody who calls for more censorship on TV while doing nothing toward
outlawing, with force, all telemarketing, by telephone and/or fax,
should be exiled for life to Iraq for doing nothing about that
obscenity, either.

I doubt telemarketing calls (even as bad as I hate them too) have much

You possibly believe that those milk carton pictures and amber freeway
marquee signs are making the world an infinitely better place, too.
Which I don't.
Where exactly do kids learn to say "And if you call or worse, fax me
again, I will have you FCCing killed. So help me if there's any
justice in the world you will not wake up tomorrow" ? - like, from a
glimpse of a nipple on TV, or ...post-telemarketing interaction ?
Just wondering.

Good thought.

The latest telemarketing is voice-mail spam. You can't even tell them
to *****. And the worst of these manage to hold the line even if
you put the phone down - the only way to get the line back is to
unplug and replug at the wall.

That's illegal (at least up here.) They have to relinquish the line
in case of emergency. Some outfit tried that tape recorded spam trick
here and got some sort of fine or other penalty for their trouble.

The local phone company here won't do a damn thing. We called and
complained about a survey company which kept calling and calling and
got abusive when you refused to take their survey. They'd call, swear
at you on the phone, threaten to come to your house and beat you up,
etc. I called Verizon, they said there wasn't a damn thing they would
do about it, you had to have a trace set up on your phone before they
called and then, who knows if they'd do anything. They refused to
block the number too.
After a while, it stopped, I think enough people either got fed up or
they just went down to the telemarketer's office and burned it down.

That sucks. You can't just dial (what is it *611 or something) to log
a trace and call the cops? Given the menacing with threats, I bet if
you taped the call and got the log you could have sued the #$%^& out
of the caller.
