Object: Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act
You know things are getting out of hand when a leading Democrat begins to
call for decency and family values to be injected into television
programming. The party that usually promotes and protects these deviants is
now taking the lead in trying to curb their excesses. Talk about irony.

Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act
If the industry doesn't take significant steps to make it easier for parents
to control what their children view on television, Congress will step in and
legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a
speech Wednesday in Washington.
"The amount of questionable content spilling across our screens is growing
by the year," Sen. Obama said at a press conference to release a new study
by the Kaiser Family Foundation that says the number of sex scenes on TV has
been increasing dramatically over the past several years.
"Once again, we find ourselves asking those in charge to serve the needs of
a nation that has a higher calling than simply peddling indecency and
materialism for profit," the senator said.

Whatever happened to the 'V' chip, and why haven't people figured out
how to use them? Instead of picking on the broadcasters, maybe they
should ask the manufacturers to write better manuals - or maybe they
should encourage consumers to RTFM. :-)

The fundies are too fucking dumb to use it.
OTOH, if suddenly this appeared in their tracts one Sunday..
'The LAWD commands YOU to use your almighty V-Chip or face eternal
dayum-NA-tion in the lake of fire and brimstone...'
....then they might be scared into learning how to use it. You could make a
fortune writing second-grade level instructions for them.
Then again, it's apparent they have problems figuring out where the on/off
switch is.

http://www.controlyourtv.org/ has videos and plain language
explanations on how to use parental controls. If it is so important to
people, they should go to the web site and spend a few minutes to
educate themselves on how to use the technology to control their
children's viewing.

Then again, how could the American public tell?

Its not the majority of the American public that has problems
reading.... just the Religious Reich types who don't value education.

It's not fundamentalist to protect your children from tv violence. Look
at this Penn State study:
"In one study done at Pennsylvania State University, about 100
pre-school children were observed both before and after watching
television. Some watched cartoons that had many aggressive and violent
acts; others watched shows that didn't have any kind of violence. The
researchers noticed real differences between the children who watched
the violent shows and those who watched non-violent ones.
Children who watched the violent shows were more likely to strike out
at playmates, argue, disobey authority and were less willing to wait
for things than those children who watched non-violent programmes."

I wish he would do something about 20+ minutes of each hour of annoying,
irritating, aggravating, exacerbating, maddening commercials. They've
got so bad that I have just about quit watching any TV.
I believe these commercials are responsible for the belligerence and

That and the natture of the "Talkies" they pass off as entertainment.

Didn't you hear? It was Bill Clinton that talked Janet into the "wardrobe
malfunction." Bill is the cause of all that is wrong with America! This
morning he was at the Supreme Court chiseling away the dental molding.

Talk about itony that you would praise a Black man, a Dempcrat, who also says:
³A belief that we are connected as one people. If theres a child on the
south side of Chicago who cant read, that matters to me, even if its not
my child. If theres a senior citizen somewhere who cant pay for her
prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes
my life poorer, even if its not my grandmother. If theres an Arab
American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due
process, that threatens my civil liberties. Its that fundamental beliefI
am my brothers keeper, I am my sisters keeperthat makes this country work.
Its what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come
together as a single American family. E pluribus unum. Out of many, one.:

Almost all TV sets and VCR/DVD units manufactured recently contain a "V
chip" that allows parents to control what kids can watch - even when the
parents are not around. Read the manual and use the technology provided!
In fact, many US cable channels are running commercials to explains
this to people and are directing them to a web site. At
http://www.controlyourtv.org/ you can find all the information you need
on how to control the content on your TV. Don't expect the government
to raise your children for you, exercise some parental responsibility
and RTFM or go to the web site!

What's "ironic" about it? It's an opportunity to

Every TV made in the last ~10 years has the ability to block programs
based on content. It is the most unused feature ever put on a
consumer electronic device. Barack should stick to giving hell to the
GOP and not worry about TV shows.
