SENATE MULLS THURSDAY VOTE ON PRYOR NOMINATION; WHITE
HOUSE PUSHES SOLONS TO OK OTHERS BEFORE SUMMER RECESS
A vote on the nomination of Bill Pryor to a post on the 11th U.S.
District Court of Appeals could come as early as tomorrow. Opponents
may use a filibuster to block the appointment. The White House is
pushing for approval of Pryor and three other controversial nominees
in hopes of "packing" the federal judiciary. Critics say that the
confirmations would threaten civil liberties, abortion rights for
women and the separation of church and state (7-30-03)
