Proposition 71: California's Flirtation with Moral Bankruptcy
Among the issues California voters will face in November is whether to
publicly fund the destruction of human life at the cost of more than $3
billion (after financing, the total would actually come closer to $6
billion). The ballot initiative, Prop. 71, would use taxpayer dollars
explicitly for embryonic stem cell research and human cloning. Some of the
problems with this proposition are that California is already on the verge
of bankruptcy, and stem cell research and cloning have not produced a single
cure. But the most egregious problem is that this type of science kills
human life.
The push for Prop. 71 is a ploy to have California taxpayers fund a science
that the free market has judged worthless. If this science really had the
potential some in the media suggest, then the private sector would be
willing to invest in the research. Despite more than $12 million in private
funding (most of which is from out of state) to support the initiative, the
polls indicate Californians are almost evenly split on whether to support
the bill. It is critical that California voters reject this morally and
economically bankrupt initiative in November.

State Department Recognizes the Obvious
Yesterday, Secretary of State Colin Powell used the word "genocide" to
describe the current situation in Sudan, where government-backed tribal
militias continue to rampage, kill, loot, and rape. Describing the situation
as "genocide" is perfectly right, and Secretary Powell is to be commended
for doing so. It is sad, however, that it has taken nearly 20 years and more
than two million deaths for the right word to be used. Genocide has been
on-going in Sudan since the radical Sudanese regime came to power. Many
organizations, including FRC, have documented unrelenting attacks on the
black and Christian populations, and even the use of slavery in the service
of genocidal aims. Now, at least, the situation has been called by its true
name. We can only hope and pray that the U.S. and other nations take action
to stop the genocide.

Reagan Remembered
Last night FRC hosted a viewing of a new documentary, "In the Face of Evil:
Reagan's War in Word and Deed." We were pleased to have Senator Rick
Santorum introduce the film to a full house of Washington friends. It is an
inspiring look at Reagan's uncompromising commitment to fight the evils of
communism. The movie will be released in select locations early next month
and if you have the opportunity it is worth seeing.
