News from the Hill
I am happy to report some good news from Capitol Hill. Last week I mentioned
a conscience clause amendment to a key appropriations bill that ensures
private healthcare providers cannot be forced to provide abortions. House
leadership was able to protect the amendment, which will face one more
challenge when the bill is considered by a joint Senate-House conference
committee.
Another Hill issue that should be on your radar is the Defense
Reauthorization bill, which has two family issues attached to it--one that
needs protection and one that needs to be defeated. The amendment that needs
protection is the broadcast decency language that was included in the Senate
version of the bill after much dedicated effort by all of you. This decency
legislation was passed overwhelmingly in the House and Senate, and Senate
conferees need to make sure it stays in.
Also included in the Defense reauthorization is so-called "hate crime"
legislation. This thought-crime provision passed the Senate, and it could
very easily be used against pastors who preach against same-sex "marriage".
It is now up to House conferees to ensure that, like the hospitals that are
protected by the conscience clause amendment, churches are allowed to follow
their beliefs and not be silenced.

European Marriage Cases Could Set Dangerous Precedent
Homosexual activists in Europe, like those in the United States, are seeking
to bypass the democratic process and persuade activist judges to declare
homosexual "marriage" to be a "human right." Currently, the only European
countries that allow civil marriage for same-sex couples are the Netherlands
and Belgium. One of the European same-sex "marriage" cases will go to an
Austrian court first, but could be appealed to European courts. In the
other, a French homosexual couple is appealing directly to the European
Court of Human Rights.
What is most frightening is that cases like this could eventually have a
direct impact on American law. The U.S. Supreme Court cited a 1981 decision
of the European Court of Human Rights in support of its decision last year
declaring homosexual sodomy to be a constitutional right. For more on the
legal threats to marriage and the social risks of changing its definition,

Democracy to Redefine Marriage. Click on the link below for more info.

From East Coast to West Coast
I joined our friend Alan Sears and the Alliance Defense Fund team for their
fall briefing in Philadelphia on Friday night and Saturday. I spoke to ADF's
supporters about the key role that they are playing in this effort to
protect the vital institution of marriage. ADF, in conjunction with the
James Madison Center for Free Speech, announced last week that they will
offer free legal advice to churches, pastors, and priests on how to speak
about the great social and moral issues of our day without risking their
church's tax exempt status.
Yesterday, I preached four services at two different churches in Southern
California. Yesterday morning we had three great services at Calvary Chapel
in Chino Hills outside of Los Angeles with Pastor Jack Hibbs. It was easy to
see who the out-of-towner was: I was the only one in a suit. After the
second service, they bought me a Hawaiian shirt, so I preached the final
service in my new digs. Don't look for a permanent wardrobe change! Last
night's service was equally blessed as I was honored to preach at Dr. David
Jeremiah's church, Shadow Mountain Community Church. Voter drives at both
churches registered literally hundreds of new voters.
