JUNE 12, 1812.
The National Fast, recommended by me turned me out of office. It
was connected with the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church,
which I had no concern in. That assembly has allarmed and alienated
Quakers, Anabaptists, Mennonists, Moravians, Swedenborgians,
Methodists, Catholicks, protestant Episcopalians, Arians, Socinians,
Armenians, & & &, Atheists and Deists might be added. A general
Suspicon prevailed that the Presbyterian Church was ambitious and
aimed at an Establishment of a National Church. I was represented as a
Presbyterian and at the head of this political and ecclesiastical
Project. The secret whisper ran through them "Let us have Jefferson,
Madison, Burr, any body, whether they be Philosophers, Deists, or even
Atheists, rather than a Presbyterian President." This principle is at
the bottom of the unpopularity of national Fasts and Thanksgivings.
Nothing is more dreaded than the National Government meddling with
Religion.
John Adams to Benjamin Rush, June 12, 1812. Old Family Letters,
392-93; taken from Hutson's The Founders on Religion, 101-02.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

USAF LT. COL (Ret) Buffman (Glen P. Goffin) wrote
"You pilot always into an unknown future;
facts are your only clue. Get the facts!"
That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
