Pro-Family Speeches at the RNC
Last night many of you might have seen the major networks broadcast an hour
from the Republican National Convention. I am grateful that First Lady Laura
Bush took the opportunity to defend the President's position on stem cell
research. What was missed in the networks' coverage were speeches by other
leading Republicans affirming pro-family values. Among them, Senators Bill
Frist, Sam Brownback and Elizabeth Dole all affirmed the Party's pro-life
commitment. I have provided links to these inspiring speeches below. These
comments stand in stark contrast to the media's claim that the RNC is hiding
its conservative views. I am encouraged that the Republican Convention is
inclusive of a pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-faith message. I am also proud to
say that FRC's efforts in New York have born valuable fruit. What might have
been a Convention that sadly neglected traditional values has instead become
an affirmation of many of the values so many of us hold dear. FRC has worked
tirelessly the last two weeks to promote a conservative message in New York
and our hard work has paid off particularly with regard to the distinction
between embryonic and adult stem cell research. We worked with Convention
delegates last week as the Party Platform was considered and this week we
continue to distribute educational material to Convention participants and
provide commentary for press and television media.
Being here, walking to and from Convention events provides a perspective
that is partly lost in the news coverage. The protestors here are aggressive
and profane. These protestors are not interested in free speech; they want
to intimidate and destroy the democratic process. It is a shame that so much
energy is wasted. If these same young men and women committed themselves to
a healthy participation in the political process perhaps they would actually
contribute to the political debate rather than simply infuse New York with
anger. FRC has now participated in both the Democratic and Republican
conventions and I am proud that we have offered a positive and constructive
alternative to angry dissent.

Florida Supreme Court Considers Schiavo Case
Yesterday the Florida Supreme Court heard arguments regarding a lawsuit to
overturn "Terri's Law." As I have mentioned in this space before "Terri's
Law" allowed Governor Jeb Bush to preserve the life of Terri Schiavo. Mrs.
Schiavo is in a vegetative coma but breathes on her own. She requires,
however, a feeding tube in order to be saved from starvation. The lead
attorney for Governor Bush is my predecessor at FRC, Ken Connor. Ken
responded to aggressive questioning from the Court and made a convincing
argument for the legality of Governor Bush's action. This is literally a
battle over life and death. Should Governor Bush lose the case Mrs. Schiavo
would be killed by starvation through an order of the Florida state courts.
I am encouraged, however, that Governor Bush has such a talented advocate in
Ken Connor. Anyone wanting to watch the arguments at the Florida Supreme
Court can see them on C-SPAN this Saturday (9/4) at 7pm (ET).

A pity they didn't ask former first lady Nancy Reagan for *her*
opinion regarding the president's stand on stem cell research.
