Day 3 at the RNC
There's no doubt about it, Sen. Zell Miller (D-GA) was on fire last night.
As a Marine Corps veteran, I appreciated his comments regarding our nation's
military, saying they "don't just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for
us here at home" and with all the protestors here in New York, I especially
liked his comment that "it is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given
us the freedom to protest."
With all the attention given to Sen. Miller's speech, however, you may have
missed some of the pro-family policy remarks made by other speakers last
night. Gov. Mitt Romney spoke out strongly on marriage saying, "We step
forward by entering marriage before we enter parenthood...because every
child deserves a mother and a father, we step forward by recognizing that
marriage is between a man and a woman." Michael Reagan, in introducing a
video tribute to his father, gave a personal testimony to his pro-life
beliefs when he said, "I'm lucky because my mother, my father, my
birth-mother and my birth-father all had something in common. You know what
it was? They were all pro-life. And they were pro-adoption." Sen. Rick
Santorum (R-PA) touched on the role of faith-based organizations saying, "we
all agree, religion in America must never be established, but it also must
never be exiled." Well said. We look forward to President Bush's remarks
tonight.

Homosexual Groups Target Oregon in Battle Over Marriage
Recognizing that public opinion is overwhelmingly in favor of one-man,
one-woman marriage, homosexual activist groups are focusing on one state to
defeat a constitutional amendment for marriage - Oregon. With the potential
of 12 ballot initiatives that would protect marriage, the groups see Oregon
as their best hope for a victory. "We're putting our chips down in Oregon,"
said Matt Foreman of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. According to
press reports, this group has given half a million dollars and is sending
workers to the Oregon group opposing Measure 36. The Human Rights Campaign
has pledged $100,000 to the campaign, which plans to spend between $2.5 and
$3 million.
Homosexual groups may believe that they have a chance of winning in Oregon,
but they are underestimating the church community, which has risen to the
challenge of protecting marriage in unprecedented ways. It was the church
community that placed the issue on the ballot and it will be the church
community that helps educate fellow Oregonians about the importance of
preserving marriage. Homosexual groups are relying on activist judges to
help them defeat these ballot initiatives. One of those efforts failed
yesterday in Louisiana, where the state Supreme Court refused to hear the
cases challenging the placement of the amendment on a special Sept. 18
ballot. Also, in North Dakota, the Secretary of State certified their
marriage amendment for the Nov. 2 ballot.

In His Own Words
Over the past week, I have given a lot of space to what leading Republicans
and one Senate Democrat are saying in this political season. In fairness I
would like to give space to a leading voice of the established Democratic
leadership. From a church pulpit near the RNC, former President Bill Clinton
had this to say: "Terror is [the Republicans] tactic, but it is their ideas,
their hatred, their absolute certainty that they are so right that they can
kill people who disagree with them - that is our enemy." Religious
conservatives allied with Republicans "believe" that all who disagree with
them are somehow almost non-human, certainly not deserving of basic
consideration." So much for not politicking from the pulpit.

He sounded like a televangelist. Had I not known it was a political
convention, I'd have sworn I was in church.
