Object: serious question: am i an atheist or an agnostic?
I believe that there is no way to prove or disprove the existence of a
god, higher power, spirituality, whatever. But I really believe that
all religion and spirituality are totally fraudulent and just.. well..
*****... i can't prove it, but i really don't think that any of it
is true... so which am i? i've always said i was was an atheist, but
reading some stuff in here has me wondering whether people who would
say they are atheist 2475 (for example...) would consider me confused,
thoughtless, stupid, of a different mindset or whatever... thanks.

Still, agnostics should be careful not to fall into the popular trap of
accepting the possibility of the existence of god(s) simply because it
cannot be disproved. If one accepts this idea, one must entertain the
possibility of the existence of literally everything. For example, you
can't prove that Pluto is not made of purple Jell-O. You can't even say for
sure that you don't have 3 additional, invisible arms. Among the things
that we can't disprove the existence of there is most definitely a
hierarchy. In my view it is best to stick to things for which we have at
least some evidence and to disbelieve things for which we lack even a tiny
shred of evidence.
I would therefore consider myself most definitely to be an atheist, though I
would never deny evidence of anything if I happened upon it.

All really good answers. Thanks!! I'm not exactly inexperienced and I
don't REALLY have a need to define myself. I was mostly curious
because I've never considered the term agnostic very much (fence
sitting always seemed wimpy to me...) and then I felt odd when it
seemed that I was one... after thinking some more and after reading
the responses i guess technically i am both, but you all made some
great points and I really don't believe in theism so I can safely call
myself an atheist and offend christians at parties for the rest of my
life!! woo hoo!!! I guess agnosticism comes from our (most of our?)
immersion in biblical/religious culture for so long that we observe
others "knowing" things that we can't prove aren't there if prodded.
But really i guess it aint ours to prove. I do like debating though...
keep up the good work!! and thanks again.
PS. I'm not so sure about this brights thing though... it sounds a
little organized and ayn rand for my tastes, but I guess if it became
a powerful world wide lobby of sorts it could be helpful in slowly
lessening religious damage on all sorts of levels... maybe... or maybe
it's too late............... ;-)

Atheism and agnosticism are not mutually exclusive; one can easily be both.
Agnosticism constitutes an epistemological assertion concerning the question
of god. Atheism is about what someone believes, i.e., that there is no god.
So, you can be both an agnostic and an atheist.

Do you believe in a god or gods?
If you answer yes, you're a theist.
If you answer no, you're an atheist.
Note that this question does NOT address whether there IS a god or not. It
only asks whether you have a belief, and you either do or you don't.

I think a good case can be made that you're both. Atheism relates to
your beliefs. Agnosticism relates to your knowledge.

You're an atheist, by the definition we atheists use (and who else is
the expert, if not atheists themselves?).
On another note, you may want to change your handle, to avoid being
confused with Smiley Bob (who also uses 'bob' as his handle) -- and
trust me, you do *not* want to be confused with Smiley Bob...

Agnostics can be theists or atheists. However, in my experience, most
people who refer to themselves as agnostics are atheists (sometimes even
atheistic agnostics).

For the longest time I considered myself an agnostic. However, for all

there was no god, so I called myself an agnostic.
However, one day I noticed an obvious inconstancy in my philosophy. I'm
a scientist. If a fellow scientist makes a claim I do not believe it until
I see proof. And likewise if I make a claim I do not expect anyone to
believe me until I supply sufficient proof. If I make a claim I realize the
burden of proof is on me to prove that it is so, not on the other
person to prove that it is not so.
Theists make many grand claims about their gods but I have yet to see
any proof.
It all comes down to a simple statement:
There is no reason to believe in a god.
Therefore I'm an atheist.

Does it really matter?
The important thing is that the theists' very god-premise doesn't even
apply to you.
Most people (usually but not limited to theists) don't realise that
non-theists and theists aren't even talking about the same thing: to
the theist it's a given, the creator etc; to most atheists it's simply
the theist's religious belief and so what.

If you're not theist then you are atheist - it's the contrapositive.

Atheist: One without gods
Agnostic: One without knowledge of gods
Now, place yourself into the category that best suits your view of
religion and gods.

It's really quite simple bob:

Atheist: One without gods
Agnostic: One without knowledge of gods

So an agnostic is someone who doesn't know everything about certain
fantasystories?

As I recall and why I now classify myself as an atheist, an agnostic
believes that they can not know the existence of a gawd. I say this is
rubbish.
Go take a look of the definitions at www.dictionary.com and have your
stomach turned as atheist are described as "immoral". Holy cow! Stop the
presses. I just went to check the defintion of atheist and they have
removed the "immoral" part. It was in an American Heritage Dictionary
of some sort from the year 2000.
As the definitions you will find of atheist and agnostic can vary
a bit depending upon where you get them from and get expecially ugly
when written by theist-involved dictionaries. Therefore, I now
consider myself to be a Bright to avoid the whole issue and for there to
be a definitive definition of a Bright.
