Serious Question. Honest. |
Message originates from alt.atheism. You have been warned!
We Godless atheists are sometimes asked by believers of various
stripe: "what would convince you there is a God?".
By the same token I'm curious to know is there is any matter of fact,
that if shown beyond any doubt to be true, or at least beyond
reasonable dispute, that would convince you believers that there is no
God.

Go to this website, a metacrawler search site, and read about Smith
Wigglesworth. He was a preacher in England at the beginning of the
20th century. He raised several people from the dead, and it was seen
by witnesses and recorded. He was called the apostle of faith; his
faith was unwavering and the power of God worked miracles through him.

I've heard of the guy. I hadn't heard that he raised the dead.
However, raising the dead doesn't make one an "apostle." You might as
well call him an Old Testament prophet.
There were no apostles after the 1st C AD.
We see ONE attempt on the part of the apostles to appoint an apostle.
They picked Matthias, and we never hear of him again. God, however,
chose Paul to replace Judas. God chose, not man. And Paul made
history.
God's message to man was that God would choose His apostles. That is
not a task He delegated, and the apostles got the message. There is no
record that they "selected" any more "apostles" after Matthias.
God can STILL work miracles; He just can't violate His own Word.

It's not "some sort of trick."
Logic/science tells
you it is impossible...
Logic nor science tells you it is impossible. Why do you doubt merely
because you have not personally observed? That is not rational; that
is ignorance; worst of all, it is self-imposed.
Oh, you observed some dead being raised? Are you still under treatment
for that?
No, that's not the way your bible tells it.
You violated jesus' words of not adding to the bible.

Yes, one: Mohammed.
We see ONE attempt on the part of the apostles to appoint an apostle.
They picked Matthias, and we never hear of him again. God, however,
chose Paul to replace Judas. God chose, not man. And Paul made
history.
That he most certainly did. So did Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler.
God's message to man was that God would choose His apostles. That is
not a task He delegated, and the apostles got the message. There is no
record that they "selected" any more "apostles" after Matthias.
Yes, Mohammed.
God can STILL work miracles; He just can't violate His own Word.
Thus, not omnipotent. He quite often breaks his word, mind you. Read
all about it. In ... the bible! Coming soon in a church near you!

FWIW, this was actually adressed in the Bible itself. People asked if

Why would I belive someone I know and love when I refused to belive a

Because physical evidence generally counts for more than unsupported
assertions from unknown sources?
I understand how this might add to "proof," but--as someone else stated
earlier--how do you know for sure that this would change your mind? (the
earlier poster asked a person of belief something about "how do you know for
sure that nothing would change your mind?")

By the same token I'm curious to know is there is any matter of fact,
that if shown beyond any doubt to be true, or at least beyond
reasonable dispute, that would convince you believers that there is no
God.
I doubt it very, very seriously.

Right on. You'd better be careful around those viscous atheists too. I
can handle elastic atheists and plastic atheists just fine. However,
when you get to viscous atheists, the equations of motion get a little
too hairy. Better stay away from them.
