Serious Question. Honest. |
Message originates from alt.atheism. You have been warned!
We Godless atheists are sometimes asked by believers of various
stripe: "what would convince you there is a God?".
By the same token I'm curious to know is there is any matter of fact,
that if shown beyond any doubt to be true, or at least beyond
reasonable dispute, that would convince you believers that there is no
God.

Actually, my prime interest is in the truth; I am always looking
for evidence of what is true.
There is a bundle of evidence in the Bible, but you just explain it
away. Why? Not because it's not true. You shove it aside because you
simply aren't interested.
On the contrary, I explain it away because it *can* be explained as
not true. There is nothing in the Bible that I find convincing
- instead, I *started* as a believer and the Bible converted me
into an atheist. It struck me as evidence against, not evidence for.
You have obviously not studied beyond the "assumed inconsistencies".
Those of us who have made a life's study of the Bible find no serious
conflicts.
So your protestations of your "beliefs" BEFORE reading the Bible
indicate you were NOT a believer if the Bible "unconvinced" you. You
were "of us", yet not "one of us."

I have studied the Bible intensively for the last 10 years. That is not
correct. There are considerable conflicts. While conflicts within the book
do not invalidate God, it is curious to stick to the position that there are
no issues.

I think it's the easiest way for some people to avoid the issues -
if you deny that they exist, you don't have to spend any work
arguing with people who disagree with you - you can just tell
them that they are liars or unthinking, and move on. The fact
that doing so makes Christians look arrogant or unthinking
themselves may not matter much to him.

I agree - I consider people like John to be the best allies of
atheists, as they are capable of making Christians think again
about their very identity. If person X is a Christian, and he
acts like that, what does that say about Christianity? (IMO,
what it really says is that Christianity contains all sorts of
people, just like other religions and atheism also. But it
causes problems for those who think that Christianity leads to
good behavior.)
If it helps any, I don't hold the Johns against the Figinns. You
don't have any control over your fellow Christians.

This is a process on your part that is referred to as denial
You will be able to access far better treatment when you recognise it as
the cornerstone of your behaviour pattern
Your defence of your denial is what causes the abuse -
The shouts of "demon" "liar" "heretic" "alQuaeda"
The threats to people and their families that are surrounded with the
expressed love of handguns
And your inability to respect the opinions of others or take in fresh
information

Claiming that anyone who argues with you is not for real is a pretty
clear case of avoidance IMO. But in any case, it's pretty clear
that I'm not going to get anything from you but abuse, so there's
no point in further communications between us. I'll have to look

It would be if that were what I said. Your words do NOT reflect what I
said, so you are twisting my words to cheat, defraud, and deceive
already! NOT a good start!
I'd clarify, but I don't wish to waste my time. I believe you are
pre-disposed to twist both my words and their meaning no matter what I
say.
However, just this once.
I did NOT say that "anyone who argues with me is not for real..."
I SAID that I have been through just about every issue being raised IN
THIS GROUP, and I have answered NUMEROUS of these questions IN THIS
GROUP REPEATDLY!
You are asking me nothing I haven't been asked and answered. You are
not serious. You don't come to me with a question for which you
cannot find an answer. You come with jaw stuck out, fangs and claws
bared, and you CHALLENGE me.
WHEN/IF you get serious, come back.

I doubt he's much interested in that - he seems to much prefer
attacking people to convincing them. Sometimes it's more
satisfying to be self-righteous than to be righteous.
