Sex, religion, and Mass Murderers |
A number of theists have stated on alt.atheism that without god they
would become unfettered by morals, and that they would then go on some
kind of crime spree or another.
Charles Carl Roberts IV is the guy who just shot those little Amish
girls. He said that he "hated" god. I think this is an example of what
those other theists talk about on alt.atheism, who say it is their
belief in god that is keeping them in line. It appears that the next
step away from believing god for some theists is hatred of god (which
still involves belief in that god, and does not make him an atheist,
just in case I need to spell it out).
Personally, I think it goes deeper than that. I think when sex is mixed
with religion there can be some very disturbing results. I don't think
Freud should be dismissed as much as he is, sex IS a fundamental
motivator, and religion is sold as a guarantee that males get sex when
they want and that the women are exclusive. This Charles Roberts seems
to have been motivated by sex and used his hatred of god as
justification for what he did.

Take it deeper yet. Religion has nothing to do with it. It's only an
overlay for behavior, just as it is for us "normal" folks.

Religion influences how mental illness manifests itself. In this guy's
case, I wonder if it CAUSED these actions. He didn't appear to be
mentally ill, as far as I've read.

Religion may be influence the way that mental illness manifests, but IMO
it does not cause mental illness. Religion-related causes of mental
illness may include abuse for alleged religious reasons,
religion-required suppression of feelings or trauma-related stress.
This guy had a number of problems he was acting out, but there is no
hallucinatory "God/angels made me do it" or an expression like "This is
how I worship," or anything else. The fact that he says he "hates God"
would have to be interpreted - it may be redirected self-hatred, for
example.
The fact that he killed himself may be an indication of clinical
depression. That is biochemical, although possibly trauma induced.
Unfortunately or not, we will never know.

Very probable.

Induced conflict between reality and ingrained from childhood fantasy.
