"Shadows in the Darkness" by Elaine Cunningham.
I read this a week ago and was amused and disappointed because the
book's jacket lied -- or actually it was "mistaken." The book's
jacket talks about the private investigator -- a small woman -- and
her fight against child abductions where the children are used in
sex slavery. The jacket also talks about her destruction of a
Catholic pedophile ring and talks about sinister forces that are
threatening to destroy humanity.
Fact is the book doesn't contain anything about Catholic sex rings
(destroyed or otherwise) and doesn't even _hint_ at anything that
threatens humanity.
What it does cover is an Elder Race of humans who came before
Homo Sap Sap, nothing of which has anything to do about the core of
the story: finding an abducted girl by a presumed pedophile ring.
There were lots of other holes in the story. DNS samples were
being taken from guests at a strip joint yet it was never disclosed
_who_ was conducting the search for the non-human DNA. The story
alludes that someone of the Elder Race was searching for a lost
Race member -- a Changeling -- but the story then says that the
Elder Race already knew who it was -- the private investigator. So
the Elder Race wasn't conducting the survey.
There were other holes in the plot. In contradiction to the jacket's
comments about what was contained within, the only Catholic in the
book -- a nun who ran a shelter -- was on the good side of things.
It was a quick read -- took two days. The concept of a non-human
race that lives secretly among humans was good -- intelligent race,
I mean. But the book never explained _what_ the Elder Race was
doing. There was no indication that it was controlling or directing
human activities. There was no tie-in to child abductions,
pornography, or anything else that was in the book.
It was almost as if two stories were combined after they were written.

The book I think of most when it comes to "two books confused into one"
is the horrible, really shitty book "Friday." It reads like someone
took two totally different books and appended one to the end of the
other with no attempt at all of trying to harmonize the two books.
Actually it also reads like a half-dozen different people wrote it, and
those half-dozen people did not bother talking to each other regarding
what they were writing.
"Job" was almost but not quite equally bad.

Didn't we discuss "Friday" here once? As I recall, Henlein had
suffered a stroke or something and the book reflected the change
in his behavior.

I thought that was "Stranger In A Strange Land".
