Shifting Nature
How can China feed a fifth of the world's population on only 7% of the
world's arable land? A third of the world relies on water from China's
rivers but rapid industrialisation and climate change have led to
polluted air, dirty rivers and drought.
This film follows environmental activists, government officials,
academics and scientists as they wrestle with how to limit and
ultimately prevent further damage to China's natural environment.
The task for environmental campaigners like Huo Daishan is immensely
difficult. He's trying to save a river into which millions tons of raw
human sewage and untreated waste water are tipped daily. But he's up
against corrupt local officials who protect local industries rather
than clamp down on polluters.
50,000 people along the river's banks suffer from cancer. In one
village alone, 118 people have died. The Deputy Minister of the
Environment accepts that many cancer cases are related to environmental
pollution but says he is powerless to shut down polluting companies.
