Should Pluto Stand Still... |

Should Pluto decide to reverse course, who is going to stop it.
Should Pluto break down like a car, What "Scientist" would fix it?

Never stopped. Conservation of momentum and all that. If you had studied
Noether's theorem you wouldn't have to ask:
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/noether.html
If you want to have a look for yourself you will need some star charting
software, dark skies and a decent scope (proabably at least twelve inch
aperture for a novice:
http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/
An inexpensive scope that will do the job:
http://tinyurl.com/r93w4
Pluto can currently be seen in Serpens Cauda close to the Ophiuchus border.
By the time you get your scope, the moon will be a problem so you will have
to wait till the moon is well past full. Remember that Pluto is only mag
13.9 or so, you will probably need to use averted vision and verify using the
above the charting software.

You must be talking about Mickey's canine companion. Planets (ok ok,
dwarven planets) don't suddenly reverse course. Newtonian physics 101.
But I can see how such concepts would be confusing to someone who

One merely has to spend the time in contemplation of the scriptures. For,
is it not written, in the book of Hesitations, chapter 3, verse 14:
"And the Lord did say: 'Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!'"

It cannot stop. The energy required would shatter the planet.
No brakes! No brakes!!!
The earth didn't shatter when God made it stop rotating for Joshua.
Please tell you are joking. Please.
But I imagine that the kinectic energy of Pluto is vastly greater than
the rotational kinectic energy of the Earth.
Not even close. The Earth is far more massive. Remember: KE = (mass
x velocity^2)/2 or 1/2 mv^2

No. I believe every word of it, duh.
But I imagine that the kinectic energy of Pluto is vastly greater than

You are not paying attention to the physical problem at hand. Yes it
is close. Of course the Earth is more massive, but we are comparing
Pluto's ORBITAL kinetic energy with the Earth's ROTATIONAL kinetic
energy, not the Earth's orbital kinetic energy. It turns out that the
Earth's rotational kinetic energy is somewhat less than Pluto's orbital
kinetic energy, though they work out to a same order of magnitude. I
had intuitively thought that the difference would be greater than it
actually is. According to Wikipedia
Pluto: mean orbital speed=4666 m/s and mass=1.305 x 10^22 kg. We
deduce that mean orbital kinetic energy = 1.4206 x 10^29 joules.
Earth: mean orbital speed = 2978 m/s and mass=5.974 x 10^24 kg. We
deduce that mean orbital kinetic energy = 2.64 x 10^33 joules.
However, this last number is not what we want. To get rotational
kinetic energy for Earth we need to know the moment of inertial about
an axis. Recall that for a sphere of mass m and radius r and uniform
density, the moment of inertia about an axis is I = (1/5)mr^2.
Using radius r = 6.37 x 10^6 m we get moment of inertia I = 4.84 x
10^37 kg m^2. Since we can easily calculate the angular velocity omega
to be 7.292 radians/s we use E = (1/2)I omega^2 to deduce that
for Earth
rotational kinetic energy = 1.289 x 10^29 joules
As I claimed, this is less than Pluto's orbital kinetic energy, though
it is much closer than I thought it would be. Strictly speaking, this
calculation assumes constant density for Earth which is not true. The
Earth is denser closer to the center. Thus my calculation above
somewhat overestimates the moment of inertia and hence overestimates
the rotational kinetic energy. Thus the real rotational kinetic energy
is smaller than my above estimate which is already smaller than Pluto's
orbital kinetic energy. So there!

Just noticed bad typo. Angular velocity for Earth's rotation is 7.292
x 10^(-5) radians/s not 7.292 raidians/s. I used the correct number in
my calculations but typed it wrong when I posted the above.

This science ***** is *****, stop it now.
God would disapprove.
Arrest these astronomers right now.
Next they'll tell us the Bible is a mostly fictional work of man.
