Shouldn't Americans Support the Troops? |
"War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and
degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is
worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to
fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a
miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so
by the exertions of better men than himself."
-- John Stuart Mill
War IS an ugly thing, but as long as nations and leaders exist that detest
freedom, sometimes it is the only way to secure a lasting peace. Most
leftist anti-war protesters and pundits don't understand this. They state
that this use of force is always unnecessary -- that war, ANY war, is never
good. Some of them, born into the luxury of American freedom, believe that
liberty can exist passively, that somehow the world's natural state will
always settle into utopian harmony. Others, in an attempt to absolve
themselves from the unearned guilt they harbor living in a nation of
prosperity and wealth, try to buy morality on the cheap by pronouncing
themselves for the 'good'. To them, the derivation of the 'good' is based on
a simple, yet peculiar standard: the powerful and competent are wicked,
while the feeble and impotent are innocent - regardless of the context. That
is why they defend Iraq instead of America, and the Palestinian "resistance"
instead of Israel.
These leftists usually carry the loudest megaphones. And left unchallenged,
their voices are heard disproportionately, demoralizing our troops, and
emboldening dictators around the world - dictators who dream of the day the
"Great Satan" disappears from the face of the earth.
However, their self-righteous messages go silent quickly when the truth of
history and reality is thrown back in their face. It's time to turn up the
juice on OUR megaphones, as we will never keep our supreme values of liberty
and justice without the will to fight for them.

Indeed. But we should not trust the leaders that put them there. We
will not win in Iraq. We cannot make the different sects like each

insurection in one part of the country, there will be another somewhere

Bush and his cronies have set us up in a situation where we cannot win,
cannot exit with honor, cannot exit at all without starting a civil war
that would end with a strong-man like Sadam or a theocracy like Iran.
Stating opinions like mine is dishonoring the troops? I think not. My

one he fought in. He dishonors the troops?
Trying to change policy is not dishonoring the troops.

That is irrelevant to the consideration of supporting the troops.

I didn't say that anybody is dishonoring the troops, but I will ask, what
you are "doing" to support the troops?
: Trying to change policy is not dishonoring the troops.
Your equivocating honor and support doesn't work. And just exactly how are
you "personally" trying to change policy? Are you a senator or a
congressman? Again, what are you "doing" to support the troops while they
are where they are for whatever reason?

How do "we" do that? I am talking about showing them that we care while they

How do "we" do that?
"We" meaning the American government. Specifically, the Bush regime. The problem
is, doing so would be an admission that the United States invaded a foreign
country on false pretenses and has remained as an occupational force, and I just
don't see Haliburton making such admissions.
I am talking about showing them that we care while they
are where they are. Not merely with words or protests, but by action.
And the best action is for our government to admit, under the light of growing
evidence, that the mission is a fraud from start to finish and bring American
troops home from Iraq. Or is it more important that our soldiers be maimed and
killed, that spouses be bereived and children made orphaned and loyal men and
women be crippled for the rest of their lives, than for Bush & Co. to lose
"face"? How do YOU define "supporting our troops?"

You know, I bet about 100% of you people don't know that when we came home

veterans called us losers and treated us like losers. This happened even

It isn't the local population that is causing the problems.
So there are no locals bombing our troops, and killing any Iraqis who
work with us? It's all foreigners? Not likely.

Well, the simplest explaination is that, deep in Iraq, most people are
Iraqi. I go with Occam on this one.

Well, the simplest explaination is that, deep in Iraq, most people are
Iraqi. I go with Occam on this one.
Occam would remember that there are several factions among Iraqis, most
of whom have accepted places in the new government. So it's not the
local population, it is at most a small fraction of the locals, acting
alongside a number of foreigners.

Not according to the Iraqis themselves.
In fact, that's why they concocted a plan to spare
Saddam Hussein in exchange for peace.
The plan is entirely dependent on the idea that the
"terrorists" in Iraq are Iraqis loyal to Saddam.

It isn't the local population that is causing the problems.
True, it's the US invaders.

Which they are you referring to?
The Iraqi "insurgents". They seem to be fighting on their own land,
fighting a foreign invader. Their method of fighting is to kill anyone
they can, stir up hate, knowing that it will be directed against us in
the end, and they are correct. Our presence has made them successful,
and I resent anything that rewards such evil as bombing civilians.
Perhaps if we'd waited, had a president who could have brought a true
international coalition together based on facts, not a sham coalition
based on transparent lies, we could have led the Iraqis to a free
government.
But no, that is now forever impossible. No Iraqis like us. One group
uses us to strengthen themselves against the other. Good men and women
die in a hopeless war, a war where simply defending themselves breeds
more hate against them and the United States. And we look more and more
like the thugs we fought against in WW2 and the cold war to the rest of
the world.

: Yes, but they are at the home team, we're the away team.
Which they are you referring to?
The Iraqi "insurgents". They seem to be fighting on their own land,
fighting a foreign invader. Their method of fighting is to kill
anyone they can, stir up hate, knowing that it will be directed
against us in the end, and they are correct.
They are *not* correct. Their tactic is not working. They're stirring up
hate, all right, against *themselves*.
Our presence has made
them successful, and I resent anything that rewards such evil as
bombing civilians.
You must really resent yourself.
Perhaps if we'd waited, had a president who could have brought a true
international coalition together based on facts, not a sham coalition
based on transparent lies, we could have led the Iraqis to a free
government.
But no, that is now forever impossible. No Iraqis like us.
They make not like us, but they *hate* the terrorists.
One group
uses us to strengthen themselves against the other. Good men and
women die in a hopeless war, a war where simply defending themselves
breeds more hate against them and the United States. And we look more
and more like the thugs we fought against in WW2 and the cold war to
the rest of the world.
Only because of anti-American propaganda like the stuff you're reciting.
And yes, it's anti-American. Don't waste your breath on denials.
