Sidewalk Protest |
I saw a group of protesters today, standing on the sidewalk in front of one
of those Christian Fellowship churches. They were just standing by the
entrance to the parking lot, not making any trouble, and carrying signs
that read God Kills, God caused 9-11, and The Church will send you to Hell.
If these were atheists, and I doubt they were, they are the ones that give
us the reputation of "God haters".

That makes *no* sense at all. I can't think of any group that would do
that. If they were atheists then they were *very, very stupid* atheists.

No idea. It seems improbable that they were atheists. If they were

There were four adults around 30-something, three with signs, and about a
dozen little kids - ages about right for 30-something parents.
What weirder cult could there be than the fundies inside the "church" they
were picketing? I'm starting to think left-wing activists. Anti Bush

Someone else suggested that they might have been Phelpses. It sounds

think it was clear that they were not atheists.

Maybe it was members of the church pretending to be atheists to make
them look bad and they didn't think it through.

It almost sounds like the Phelps clan, who do carry signs much as you
describe. Do you know if that church had recently had someone outted as a
gay, or something else that, in the twisted mind of the Eastboro Baptist
Church could be thought of as related to gays or "gay-support"?

As Yang has pointed out, they were most likely Fredphelpsians.
Your remark about children reminded me about an anti-war protest
I took part in, last year in Phoenix. This city being full of
the most neanderthal reactionaries in the country, it's not
surprising that there were a lot of pro-war counterprotestors,
including some cretin with a bullhorn who kept moronically chanting:
"You are traitors, you are scum, be-cause you su-pport Sad-dam."
Then there were the older couples who kept driving past in cadillacs
and what not, with elegantly coiffed women dressed up to the nines
who would flip us off as they rolled past. But - finally getting
to the point - what discouraged me most was a guy with a young boy
in tow, who couldn't have been more than 8 years old. They had
been among the pro-war crowd across the street. Then they drove
up and stopped in front of us, and the kid leaned out the window
and screamed: "Go back to Iraq, Saddam lovers." Charming. Nothing
like brainwashing them while they're young, and filling them up
with hatred.

Read your local paper. In my town at least, something like that
couldn't take place without attracting media attention or letters to
the editor. I can't imagine why anyone would do that unless there was
something specific going on at that church.
