Dear Friends,
My mother, Sidney, died Monday morning July 5 at age 91, from complications
of liver disease. She prided herself on being tough, and was to the end, as
she would seem to slip away and then rally, many times. She had said
several times that she wanted to last long enough to vote against Bush!
Roger, Donna, and I were with her, and we each said good-bye in our own
ways.
I was in Long Beach, CA, attending an assembly of UUs when Donna called to
say Mom was slipping away last Sunday, and I drove back immediately. It was
very moving to hear so many expressions of affection for her from dozens of
UUs who knew her from long affiliations with four UU churches; from our
extended family; from many dear friends in the apartment complex here; and
from friends in Boston who knew her through me. Sidney's early married life
was filled with adventure since she and my Dad roamed the USA for five
years in the mid-1930s in a home-built house car. She enjoyed travel and
new experiences, which inspired me. But I think her middle years were often
lonely and dominated by my father, and she felt vulnerable.
She believed in peace and was skeptical about the need for war; she loved
nature and farms, where she spent much of her youth; she believed in
separation of church and state and our family's role in the Supreme Court
case, and she deserves much credit, especially for helping Roger and Donna
to cope in their teen years. Shge received the Clara Barton Award from the
UUCherry Hill Church for service and shared in many awards with Ed from the
American Humanists, Church & State magazine, the Philadelphia Freethought
Society, and others.
After they moved to California in 1999, where Donna gave them huge support.
Especially after Ed was in a nursing home and she was on her own, Sidney
really blossomed, making many new friends. She loved the West Coast. Two
years ago, she went to Tahiti with her friend Dottie, and later they went
to Hawaii. Twice in the last years at age 89 & 90, she flew alone across
the country to visit me and East Coast friends and relatives. Over the last
years when I visited here, we took some wonderful trips together, to her
birthplace in Grant's Pass, Oregon and nearby Crater Lake and Mt. Lassen
National Parks; to Yosemite; and just last March to Kings Canyon and
Sequoia Nat'l Parks in the Sierras. She had a very wonderful time at the UU
General Assembly last summer in Boston, and enjoyed traveling to
Philadelphia and Vermont last autumn. It is very sad that this joyful time
in her life was impaired and cut short with health problems.
I came to know her more and appreciate her in new ways in these last years,
and I wish there could have been more time. I am missing her very much.
She always felt a reverent and spiritual bond to California's redwood
forests. We will scatter some ashes there and bury some with Dad's under an
osage orange tree at the Cherry Hill UU Church in New Jersey.
We will hold a Memorial Service for her here at Starr King UU Church on
Saturday, July 10.
For all of you who might be inclined to vote against Bush in November,
please remember Mom!
Regards, Ellery

Well, it wasn't my loss. I posted the email I received from
Ellery Schempp. His father died last year and his mother this year.

Hmmmm, interesting. Teflon baby Bush rides again.

My sentiments exactly. I was tempted sorely to make inappropriate
remarks, but I was able to exercise self-control and not make a complete *****
of myself.
I lost my beloved mother to cancer 7/29/01 at age 58; my wife followed
along 4/16/03 at age 46.
Whether she is 58 or 91, it is always too soon to lose your one and only
Mother.
Unfortunately, I know exactly how you feel, and so do my three little
children......
My deepest sympathy,
Bob, from Glassboro, NJ<><
