Object: Sigh. . . Christian Bigots . . .
I just got home from a job interview. While waiting in line, some of the other
applicants and I were discussing educations, previous occupations, and what
not. Well, I explained that my original major was Secondary Education, but that
I dropped it for "personal reasons." One of the other applicants pressed the
issue, so I just told them.
"I don't think I'd last very long as a teacher in the Bible Belt. My personal
ideals don't fit in with what parents here want their children being exposed
to."
.. . .Wait for it. . .
"You're not one of those people that think we came from monkeys do you?"
"Um, I don't believe we were created in six days by some god. I am an atheist,
if that's what you're asking."
"Would you like to come to church with me?"
(In my friendliest possible voice) "Wasted 20 years of my life there. No
thanks."
The woman literally turned her back to me. No one there said anything else to
me after that. The conversation went on, and I got in a few words here and
there, but they acted like I wasn't even there.
I hate this place.

First, where is "this place"?
Second, you should have become a teacher. I am an atheist secondary
teacher. I haven't had any problems yet. I teach the curriculum. I
don't teach my beliefs. As long as you don't teach somewhere that
they teach creationism, it's fine.
I have had some great experiences when kids who really like me find
out I'm an atheist. The cognitive dissonance written all over their
faces is great! One girl said the most important thing she learned in
my class was that atheists weren't necessarily bad people.

(monster grin)
In the local Writer's Guild there was one Christian elderly woman who
was having problems with her computer. She'd call and I'd come out to
see what it was and if I could fix it-no charge. Most of the time I
could. Invariably, she'd be at a loss for words since "that's mighty
Christian of you" didn't apply. That was ok, as both she and I knew
what she wanted to say.
She's since moved to be nearer her daughter and I've become aware of a
few times she's lamented I wasn't in the area to lend a hand with her
computer. Gee, a church full of Christians and no one could be bothered
to lend her an assist. :\

Thank god I live in Yankee land!
Honestly, I couldn't imagine having a conversation like that with anyone. It
would be beyond surreal.

I think my answer would be
'You mean one of those people who understand science, why Yes!, Isn't
science wonderful? Would you like to find out why it is incorrect to
say 'we came from monkeys?'

Sigh. You missed a perfectly good opportunity to throw your feces at her
