Faith and Policy
Keep America one nation under God
By Bishop Keith Butler / Special to The Detroit News
We are one nation under God. The phrase "In God We Trust" is stamped on
our currency and declared on the floors of Congress for a reason.
There is a reason why we are the nation we are. There is a reason why we
are the superpower. There is a reason why we are the most prosperous
nation. It's because we are a nation founded on biblical Christian
principles.
The evidence is weaved throughout our history, from the colonists to the
crafters of our Constitution, presidents and subsequent courts.
For example, the colonists wrote in the New England Federation:
"We all came to these parts of America with one and the same end and
aim, namely to advance the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, and enjoy
the liberties of the Gospel in purity with peace."
The colonists recognized the biblical principles where God established
the recognition of His sovereignty.
Our founders built a nation based on the premise that self-governing
(disciplined) Christians will produce the finest society. Individual
liberty, elected representatives and limited government are Christian
virtues.
While all of America's founders were not Christians (though a great
majority were), almost every one had a biblical worldview, even the
non-Christians. Thus, our Constitution was designed to perpetuate a
Christian order.
Among the founders, Benjamin Franklin, the noted scientist and signer of
the Constitution (described as the least religious of the founders),
professed his faith in God in many recorded documents.
At the Pennsylvania Convention of 1767 to revise the Articles of
Confederation, Franklin asked that daily prayer be a part of their
deliberations. In part he stated, "I have lived, sir, a long time, and
the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth --
that God governs in the affairs of men."
For 160 years, many of our court (including the Supreme Court) decisions
and opinions were based on biblical statutes, as Christian principles
were a part of American public life.
Today, secularists argue that Christianity is outdated because it is
intolerant to other religions. Not true. It's because we are a Christian
nation, that we welcome the inclusion of all religions.
In fact, the early courts openly acknowledged that America was
pluralistic and tolerant of other religions only because it was a
Christian nation. The founders acknowledged the presence of numerous
religious groups in America, including Buddhists, Muslims and Jews,
while still recognizing the country's Christian foundation.
Our God is a God of choice and gives us the freedom to choose. That's
why we are the freest nation. And today, an overwhelming majority of
Americans still consider themselves Christian, despite efforts by a
small minority to make it an ungodly one. Efforts to take God out of the
public arena have led to devastating results and can be directly
attributed to the decline in morality. That's why we're seeing higher
divorce rates, increases in teen pregnancy and more domestic abuse.
Efforts to renew our Christian heritage should be embraced. Examples
include the 1993 proclamation by Illinois, declaring that Nov. 21-27 is
Christian Heritage Week. In 1994, Indiana followed suit, as did Idaho.
There are many men and women throughout our history who fought to keep
this nation Christian. We must continue in that vain. When we don't
value God, we become a nation without values.
As our national anthem summarizes:
"Blessed with victory and peace, may this Heav'n-rescued land Praise the
Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must,
when our cause it is just; And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust!'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the
free, and the home of the brave."
Let's not forget our Christian heritage and strive to keep this one
nation under God.

It's people like that whose name should accidently appear on lists
that denies their right to vote, timed so that after the scam is
discovered, it's too late, you can't undo a vote, and recall is hard
to do.

That's great. Never mind the secular side bringing us scientific

evolutionary/boilogical sciences that help us to live healthier,

Thanks for the welcome. Everything is going to be okay. I am recovering from
major back surgery and stuck in a wheel chair (motorized...I'm destroying my
entire house with it). I walk every day with a walker trying to reteach my
brain to communicate with my back and, therefore, let me walk. On my birthday
last week I did take four independant steps! And, have done so every day
since. The surgery was successful, by the way. The pain I had before, so
incredible that morphine didn't deaden is gone. If my surgeon wore a ring, I
would kiss it!
It's interesting to be back...a lot of unfamiliar names. But, I'm so glad to
see so many I know. I am missing some. Where is Jeremy? Does Georgette still
regale the group with her nonsense?
Maybe I just haven't lurked long enough.

Pipemmie ( dang! I've been gone so long I've forgotten my a.a. nimber!)

I noticed. Welcome back. (I hope everything's okay?)

OW OW OW OW OW....Welcome back and I'm glad things are much better.
/me caterwauls Happy Birthday to Pipemmie.

It's interesting to be back...a lot of unfamiliar names. But, I'm so glad to
see so many I know. I am missing some. Where is Jeremy? Does Georgette still
regale the group with her nonsense?

Jeremy's working on an album, iirc and the nutcase is still around.

Maybe I just haven't lurked long enough.

All the best, Pipemmie

I still think that :-(

That's great. Never mind the secular side bringing us scientific
advancements in medicine and technology. Never mind
evolutionary/boilogical sciences that help us to live healthier,
longer lives despite 'biblical Christian principles' that would drag
us back to the Stone Age.

Keep America one nation under God

By Bishop Keith Butler / Special to The Detroit News

We are one nation under God. The phrase "In God We Trust" is stamped on
our currency and declared on the floors of Congress for a reason.

Didn't have to read any further. Wonder if Bishop Butler *knows* the
reason...
(hint: while some currency said it before, it was made law in 1953;
that year sound familiar?)

He'd only hand-wave the matter aside and say it never happened that way,
and any honesty about it is nothing more than revisionism.
