I do. Had a chunk of my face cut off two years ago (left behind a simply
lovely scar). What do you want to know?

How long between the time you caught it, and they removed it? Did you
know (or suspect) it was cancer when you first saw it?

Two weeks.
Did you

know (or suspect) it was cancer when you first saw it?

Not when I first saw it, but when I noticed that it was growing, I
definitely suspected skin cancer - and I was right.
Seriously, after reading that post with your family history, please, PLEASE
go to a dermatologist and get it checked out. You're obviously quite
concerned. Also, if you're a sun worshipper, STOP immediately. I get
teased for being so pale in the summer, but I just point at my scar. Nuff'
said.

Ouch, that's terrible :(

He was RCC. I wasn't aware he was sent home to die. In a prior surgery
his vocal chords were removed. I called and said Hello? a few times to
no answer then his ex-wife's voice came on the line. I then knew what
happened and shuddered-talking to a 'dead' man. He died three days
later.
His ex-wife called the police when he collapsed, and police and fire
department medics arrived. Turns out one of them was a friend of his.
Of course, the friend wanted to revive him, but was informed there was a
DNR order on him. He was also told he could revive him, but the victim
wouldn't thank him for it. The poor friend had to sit and watch his
friend die.

Oh my, how awful :(

Sadly, I had found out later drugs couldn't keep the pain away-and he
couldn't even scream. I'm sure he was aware of who's voice was coming
through the phone receiver. I hope he drew some comfort from it.
That great uncle that had been praying to die for 4-1/2 years finally
did. Guess Jesus got tired of torturing him 'in this life.'

Wow, I haven't known anyone really close to me, dying of cancer.
Never had any serious health issues, just found the spot this week. But
cancer does run in the family -though I never paid any attention to it.
Something like skin cancer, do they just cut it or burn it off your
skin or do you *must* get chemotherapy (other cells in the body) or is
it concentrated in the spot it shows up at?
My Grandmom had cancerous spots burned off her face (in her late 80's),
my Mom had colon cancer, eldest sister had breast cancer, another
sister recently had pre-cancerous cells on her face treated, another
sister had thyroid cancer --and then this little thing pops up -I have
my suspicion . . .yes, because I _never_ had a mole in that spot. I'm
not sure how long its even been there. (Winter, wearing pants all the
time). I'm still a little in shock.

That would really depend on what kind you might have. Basal cell is the
easiest to get rid of - that's what I had and they just cut it out.
Melanoma is much more serious because it gets into your bloodstream and can
resurface later. The woman who ran my daughter's preschool had a melanoma
removed from her arm a couple of years ago. I just heard from a friend
recently who have checked out the preschool for her son that this woman had
cancer (don't know what kind) and was currently going through chemo.

Have you noticed it growing? I found this spot on my face and watched it
get bigger over a period of two weeks. Went right to the dermatologist.
The doctor was originally hesitant to remove it as it was on my face. I
insisted. Got a call three days later that it was skin cancer.
Seriously, if you're concerned (especially with your family history) just go
and get it removed andget a biopsy. It's worthy it.

My brother had cancer in a lymph node and all 34 were removed. After
that a face mask was made and radioactive isotopes were placed in
specific locations. Every weekday for about two months he'd go to the
doctor for a shot before wearing the mask for fifteen minutes.
Blood tests come back clear, but the radiation burned out his saliva
gland so he's got to keep water with him so he can talk. The docs don't
know if the saliva gland will ever regain function.

Ask a doctor. Don't mess around. When you call the doctor use the phrase
"sudden onset" and "growing rapidly". You will get attention and in a big
way. They will want to see you ASAP.

You're right, and I *should* have seen it over the past weeks.. really.
I am going to start paying much better attention to myself than this. I
can't understand how it got there that quickly, and as large as it is
(about the width of a pencil eraser right now). This is frightening
that a cancer (or benign tumor) could grow that rapidly.
I won't wait for it to become any larger, I'm taking Robibnikoff's

See the doc and ask what it is. It could be a boil, aka abcess. If (s)he
says "lets wait and see" you say "Let's not and then say we did.". They
might want to do a biopsy just as it is and just zap it if the lab results
come back positive. It could be a benign growth. That happens a lot. In
which case they numb it or freeze it and snip-snip. All gone!
Right half of my thyroid started growing and did it pretty fast too. Had
tests done, doc removed that half, tested it right there in surgery and it
was benign. Went home the next morning. No big deal. If it was
cancerous then I would be in the hospital for a week. BFD
What is the thing they say all the friggin time? "Early detection" right?
You are in the "early detection" phase so don't worry. It is those
people that let stuff go until it is the size of a baseball or softball
that wind up in trouble.
Whatever you do, DON'T PANIC. And don't mess with it. If you have to put
a bandaid over it. Find someone who is a RN activly working in a
hospital. Get their advice on who to see. They know who is good and who
isn't.

result of not drinking enough. My ear nose and throat guy said my throid
suddenly growing was the result of a lifetime of impure thoughts. I
almost fell out of the chair laughing and told him that I was doomed. He
agreed.

I won't wait for it to become any larger, I'm taking Robibnikoff's
advise and asking for it to be removed and a biopsy performed.

Excellent :)

I hope whatever this is, it hasn't had time to spread into the
bloodstream or other layers of skin . . I've been wearing pants since
winter began -it could have been there for weeks and I wouldn't have

I hope it's something like this (below) -because I have a fair
complexion (maybe it won't be all bad news to go to the doctor):
"Benign Skin Tumors: Most tumors of the skin are not cancer and rarely
if ever turn into cancers. But a few can sometimes turn into cancer.
They are a warning that the skin has been damaged and that you should
check your skin regularly. Actinic keratosis (also known as solar
keratosis) is a pre-cancerous problem caused by too much sun. It causes
small, rough spots that may be pink-red or flesh-colored. They often
appear on the face, ears, back of the hands, and arms of middle-aged or
older people with fair skin."

Not sure though, it's on my leg.
Anyways, thanks for the link. I hadn't even thought about American
Cancer Society for info. I'd tried Google images, but not much luck
there for images to compare with.

Have you noticed it growing? I found this spot on my face and watched it
get bigger over a period of two weeks. Went right to the dermatologist.
The doctor was originally hesitant to remove it as it was on my face. I
insisted. Got a call three days later that it was skin cancer.

Seriously, if you're concerned (especially with your family history) just
go
and get it removed andget a biopsy. It's worthy it.

I think I will.

Think, my *****! Just go do it!
I haven't had time to see it doing anything -just

noticed it this week when the weather turned warmish, and put on
shorts. It's taken a little time to get over the shock of finding it
there and thought I better start asking some questions .

What you should be doing is finding a dermatologist and getting it looked at
;)

Hopefully it'll just turn out to be nothing. I've run to the dermatologist
twice after having the initial skin cancer only to be told, it's nothing.
Better safe than sorry :)

Thanks for sharing some personal insight and *experience* with cancer.
It's difficult to find understanding people unless they've been through
something like that.
R., you're one of the few people I can say that's made the times I have
spent on usenet, enjoyable -and enlightening.
I wish you the best too, in that physicians don't find any recurrence
of your cancer. I've been aware that is a danger with cancer and you
have to follow up every few years. Will set up an appointment on
Monday. Thanks for everything.

It's been found that the body is pre-prepared for cancer spread to those
area(s). I posted the article in the last few weeks so google should
find it easily. Stuff like you're going through and looking for
information is the main reason I post the full articles.

*The only time a person gets a look at their leg is when they "take a
shower or bath"*
It didn't occur to the all-wise critic, people generally take a squat
on the toilet several times a day.
Also, do I ever take a *****? yes. Why didn't I take notice then?
That's the 20 buck question for our genius to figure out and I'm not
explaining.

uh-maybe because you are not the brightest bulb in the pack. The fact
you crap several times a day and haven't noticed anyhting only until
when you put on shorts shows you don't have attention to detail. Yes,
by all means go to the doctor and let him look at you. It doesn't take
a genius to know one should see the doctor when one spots some unusual
marking on their skin.

That's the 20 buck question for our genius to figure out and I'm not
