Nasa has a new view of enigmatic glowing clouds that may be linked to
climate change, reports Roger Highfield
They hover on the edge of space. Thin, wispy clouds, glowing electric
blue. Some scientists think these mysterious clouds are seeded by
space dust. Others suspect they're a telltale sign of global warming.
One of the first ground sightings of noctilucent clouds in the 2007
season
Sky watchers on Earth see them, too, glowing in the night sky after
sunset, although the view from Earth-orbit is better. Now a Nasa
satellite has captured the first occurrence this summer of mysterious
shiny polar clouds that form 50 miles above Earth's surface.
The first observations of these noctilucent or "night-shining" clouds
has been made by a satellite named "AIM" which means Aeronomy of Ice
in the Mesosphere, the first satellite mission dedicated to the study
of these unusual clouds.
The clouds form in an upper layer of the Earth's atmosphere, called
the mesosphere, during the Northern Hemisphere's summer season which
began in mid-May and extends through the end of August and are being
seen by AIM's instruments more frequently as the season progresses.
This is is why they are also called Polar Mesospheric Clouds.
Very little is known about how these clouds form over the poles, why
they are being seen more frequently and at lower latitudes than ever
before, or why they have been growing brighter.
AIM will observe two complete cloud seasons over both poles,
documenting an entire life cycle of the shiny clouds for the first
time.
"It is clear that these clouds are changing, a sign that a part of our
atmosphere is changing and we do not understand how, why or what it
means," said AIM principal investigator James Russell III of Hampton
University, Hampton, Virginia.

"These observations suggest a connection with global change in the
lower atmosphere and could represent an early warning that our Earth
environment is being changed."
"This mission is the first mission dedicated to the study of
noctilucent clouds," Russell said. "We have observed them with
satellites [in the past], and all it's done is left us wanting."
AIM is providing scientists with information about how many of these
clouds there are around the world and how different they are including
the sizes and shapes of the tiny particles that make them up.
Scientists believe that the shining clouds form at high latitudes
early in the season and then move to lower latitudes as time
progresses.The AIM science team is studying this new data to
understand why these clouds form and vary, and if they may be related
to global change.
Once the summer season ends in the Northern Hemisphere around mid- to
late August, the Southern Hemisphere spring season starts about three
months later in the period around mid- to late November. AIM will then
be watching for shining clouds in the Southern Hemisphere from
November through mid-March when that season ends.

I preferred the original TV series. Even though the late Raul Julia
was an excellent actor, he was just plain wrong as Gomez after John
Astin. And there is only one Morticia too, Carolyn Jones. Although

Anywho, DVRs do record more than Robot Chicken ya know. <g>
The thing about DVRs over VCRs is you don't have to figure out
"times". You want Robot Chicken, you select Robot Chicken. Then it's
recorded when ever it pops up (of course, there are options like
"only new episodes" and such).
The big thing I like about them is that I don't pay enough attention
to TV to know when a show is coming back for a new season. Like I
mentioned the new Doctor Who. I didn't know it was returning. It just
showed up on the DVR. The DVR saw new episodes and nabbed 'em.
They're also good for catching older movies that are stuck in late
time slots. Stuff like dat.
Hmmm, now that I might use it for. There's just so little I want to
see on TV.
DVRs are at least as useful, if not more so, to people who don't watch
much TV. They make it easier to pick and choose. And you don't have to
remember what's on when. If I had to remember a TV schedule, I'd never
seen anything...
I'm actually the one in the family that does know what's on TV (BTW,
"Addams' Family Values" in on on Saturday on Bravo). However, I did
price a couple of DVRs. They're expensive! I think I'll wait until they
come down in price -
I thought they had come down in price. Then again, I got mine as part of
package deal with Dish.

I took a quick peak the other day and saw them in the $300 - $800 range.
I thought they had come down in price. Then again, I got mine as part of

Same here. I have over half a season of Battle Star Galactica (the new
one) on hold. It was too "down beat" to deal with at the time given what
I was personally going through. I'll get back to it eventually...

They get more money franchising the stuff via A&E, PBS, BBC America,
Sci Fi Channel etc.
Which causes problems for ex-pats who want videos and even audio
cassettes because the in the US the Beeb sells via the franchisees,
and won't sell anything that hasn't been broadcast here yet.

Colin Baker's first appearance was as a Gallifreian guard in The Five
Doctors.
The latest series are OK but I miss the cheesy low budget BBC sets and
effects. I also liked Blake's Seven and other series.
Probably one of the reasons I liked Neverwhere - apart from the
wonderful puns on the London Underground. That had the same feel.

There have been continuity problems. It was great to see Sarah Jane

Evolution has not stopped. I see that successful career women, no
longer the young hotties, are giving up on finding husbands to meet
their standards and are now going to fertility clinics to select among
thousands of sperm donations.
They have now also begun to use the net to locate the half siblings of
any given Y chromosome line in effect creating extended families....
of remarkably talented, sociable kids who all do brilliantly in
school. The global market will pay these kids tons of money for their
talent and creativity, and I'm sure they will reward their moms in
later years for the wise choices being recently made.
Of course, other women are going to see the results; and will want the
same advantages for any kids they choose to quite literally bust a
butt pushing out into this world, which marks the beginning of the

By the way the sperm banks' schemes of providing guaranteed offspring
to those poor women trusting their scenario is off course to fall
short of the mark. Indeed what is more important that the source is
