Deaf people are making a profound contribution to the study of
language
JUST as biologists rarely see a new species arise, linguists rarely
see a new language being born. You have to be in the right place at
the right time, which usually you are not. But the past few decades
have seen an exception. Linguists have been able to follow the
formation of a new language in Nicaragua. The catch is that it is not
a spoken language but, rather, a sign language which arose
spontaneously in deaf children. Ann Senghas, of Columbia University,
in New York, one of the linguists who has been studying this language,
told the AAAS conference in Seattle about her discoveries. And Susan
Goldin-Meadow, of the University of Chicago, who studies the
spontaneous emergence of signing in deaf children, filled in the
background by showing how such children use hand signals in a
different way from everybody else.

It is as if language is biologically compulsive, any language will do,
but a young child's brain must have one or will make one up in its'
absence.

If this is true (which I think it may be), I wonder when in our evolution
that became the case. While the other apes have at least a limited capacity
for language, they obviously don't have anything like this going on...
I remember reading years ago about another new sign language developing, it
was in a group of deaf kids (in America somewhere I believe) who where
grouped together for some reason, who had never had a chance to be taught
ASL, but each had thier own collection of signs they'd come up with in thier
own families. IIRC, once they where together, a full set of grammatical
rules and a big vocabulary arose very quickly... fascinating.

Nicaragua. Google for Nicaraguan Sign Language, and you'll find a few
hundred hits.

A long time ago I read about a phenomena called "twin speak". Often
twin children will learn to talk with each other in their own made up
language even before they learn their parent's language.
Sometimes they even retain some of this language well into childhood.
