Welcoming the New Year
9th April 2005.
In Dombivli, 7 years ago, a procession of all Hindus
including Jains, Sikhs and all sects and followers of
different saints, institutes -educational and others,
children, teenagers, youngsters, elders, senior citizens,
and what not, was taken out to celebrate the new
millennium - '5001' according to an ancient Hindu era
which is named now Yugabda. The beginning somehow with a
local leader Mr Shripad Patwari is also a prominent RSS
activist, was so magnificent that all citizens not only
in Dombivli, but outside also felt that they should
follow suit. The trend had started. Now it is spreading
all over Maharashtra. In Dombivli, the main temple here
is that Shri Ganesh which is turned into a Sansthan. It
is body of people who manage the affairs.
This Sansthan is led mostly by Sangh workers. It
undertakes a multitude of undertakings, like collective
reciting of Shree Shukta, or Atharvasheersha and
celebrates Ganeshotsava with a difference. This Welcome
programme of the new year was a novel idea and it caught
the imagination of the people. Now all institutes view
with each other to participate in it. There are floats,
Lezim platoons, drums, Indian bugles (called Tutari) and
every participant or their institutes of the procession
is coming with novel ideas.
The procession, although Dombivli is not a city but a
towns was so long, its passing took about 1 hr and 20
minutes. Here is its short description.
First I heard traditional small drums which are used in
the functions of Vanavasis. Well, there were vanavasi
brothers and sisters dancing in their fashion, making
circles intertwining hands on the rhythm of the drum.
Soon, one after other groups started coming. Ganesh
Sansthan's was the largest. Every Institute or
participant had their own uniforms. A team of teenagers
comprising of disciplined boys and girls playing Lezim
with whim and force enchanted the eyes of onlookers.
Then there was a part taken by Sanatan Dharm. That is
new sect, which is also started with the inspiration of
Sangh, which had a commando like squad marching in
perfect discipline with apparently a person from army in
command. The enthusiasm of boys, girls, ladies - senior
and junior was overflowing. Because, for celebration they
had an occasion. They had a religious reference point.
This spiritual inspiration had another side also. What I
did not see? There were Purohits with traditional pagree
and moving here there video-shooting the procession. I
saw youngsters draped in traditional turbans and Maratha
warriors dress. I saw girls and ladies playing Phugdi. I
saw Laughter Club people spreading around the laughter
and healthy talk. There were Rashtra Sevika Samiti
volunteers with play of swords and teams of Lezims. The
girls of Commando participants showing the Judo and other
training they are getting. Boys, girls, adults, seniors
all were overflowing with enthusiasm. A ! lengthy one,
which included students from one hostel for Vanavasi
girls run in Dombivli to Dig amber, Shwetamber Jain
parading separately but all with common goal of
enthusiasm for the new year. No quarrelling, no jealousy.
Only competing spirit to look better and best in Hindu
tradition. Perhaps, there is a sentiment of vying with
Christians who celebrate their new year behind in the
minds of people.
It is a great start and is catching like wildfire. People
are planning months ahead for this celebration and most
important thing is all Hindus come out in their
traditional dresses and under one common umbrella of
Hinduism. Some people openly told the TV channels that
this to awaken the spirit of Hinduism. A highly
creditable idea and organizing skill of Shri Shripad
Patwari.
