Skeptic Back? |
Hey there, Skeptic watchers. I think Skeptic
may be back under yet another new name - a
Mr. Corperel or some such is showing all of
his distinctive personality quirks. :)
We'll see - I threw out a pretty much irresistable
line for him to snap at, we'll see if he takes
the hook and outs himself again.

The length of time that these posters go at it make me believe
that they are actually AI programs.

Well, I don't actually bother with Skeptic all *that*
often - it's more like every few years I poke him with
a stick to make sure he's still alive. :)

How do you tell which moniker to poke?
Look for Huxley references and go from there?

Well, his behavior is pretty distinctive. He finds
an issue, stakes out a dogmatic position based on
a reference he finds somewhere (which rarely, if
ever, actually addresses the issue being discussed;
at best, it has some minor tangential relevance),
then abuses everyone who disagrees with his position,
continually pointing to whatever reference he found
as being the definitive answer to the issue.
While there are no doubt others out there with similar
behavior, he seems to be the only one obsessively
yapping and nipping at the heels of the denizens of
alt.atheism. :)
(And Huxley references posted over and over again are
a dead giveaway indeed.)

Is he still using the grey aliens in the whitehouse example?
Whenever I see that example, my skeptic hairs raise up.

Then you two agree on this point.
Personally, it is my opinion that Skeptic is your run of the mill
obsessive compulsive with a background in logic. At least, he never
tires of the subject. He (I say he, because most obsessive
compulsives are male) is not very imaginative in his arguments, with
the exception of making up names, but has kept a few other obsessive
compulsives busy for a couple years running. He argues to satisfy
himself, not to change anyone else's mind, apparently.

Cause and effect, man, cause and effect. If we just keep him
cycling through identities, eventually he'll have used up
every possible name and will be forced to consume himself
like a snake eating its own tail. :)

You may have a point there - except that in this case the click
beetle seems to actively enjoy it. This may be a case where
the click beetle masochist is saying 'click me' and the sadists
are saying 'no'. :)
BTW, there is an alternate possibility to making him run through
every possible identity. Didn't Arthur C. Clark speculate in
'The Nine Billion Names of Skeptic' that if he ran out of names,
it wouldn't just be him that ended its existance?

Oh, I like to give new posters the doubt of not
being Skeptic - it seems kind of a harsh thing
to slap someone with, and so I end up with a
'better a guilty person be not called Skeptic
than an innocent person be called Skeptic'
mentality. Naive of me, perhaps. ;)

He has been B. Corporel since 01 Dec 2003.
Although you have probably just inspired him to change his name again.

Really? I must have missed the changeover. Deucedly rude
of him not to warn us what new name he's trying to hide under.

I'd make a comment about a way in which his name changes could
be worse, but he'd probably take the suggestion and it would
be my fault, so I think I'll just vaguely allude to it with
this sentence instead. :)
