I thought that the Dawkins fans on some of the groups I have posted to
would like to make a comment on whether they agree that Richard Dawkins
is co-responsible for the defrauding of so many poor investors in the
name of Darwinian selfish-geneism.

If you somehow think that merely explaining an existing phenomenon
makes the explainer then responsible for the consequences of that
phenomenon entails a staggering deficiency in rational thought.
Anyone who holds that position should be locked in a secure mental
institution forthwith.
Does that include you?

Dawkins himself has already answered this, the short version being
"Just because it is how it happens in nature, doesn't mean that it is
a good model for society".
As for societies based on religious ideas, try Iran.
Even our largest right wing party is no further to the right than your
largest "left" wing party.

Dawkins has long ago addressed the fact people in the "greed is good"
1980's misinterpreted the title of his book and thought that it was some
kind of justification for greed. In fact, it has nothing to do with any
of that. It says that genes function in a "selfish" manner, in the sense
that their "goal" is to propagate more copies of themselves. But that
says nothing about the motivations of human greed.

An exposition of a theory is not a guide to action. Dawkins made a
point of repeatedly reminding the reader of this fact, as he often
wrote of genes or non-human organisms as if they had human purposes,
and understood that the language could trip up an unwary reader. It
would seem that neither Skilling nor Matthews (article author) read The
Selfish Gene. If they did, they must have missed countless such
passages:
"The phrase 'the child should cheat' means that genes that tend to make
children cheat have an advantage in the gene pool. If there is a human
moral to be drawn, it is that we must teach our children altruism, for
we cannot expect it to be part of their biological nature." (The
Selfish Gene, 30th Anniversary edition, p. 139)
The Selfish Gene, generally speaking, does not advocate any courses of
action (asides such as the above notwithstanding). Rather, it
approaches evolution from the perspective that the essential unit of
selection is the gene. Nearly the entire book is spent explaining known
phenomena in this context, as they had often previously been explained
in the context of organism or population selection.
The Selfish Gene makes no pretenses to expounding upon an ethical
philosophy, and in fact repeatedly denies such a claim, noting at least
once that what is good for our genes is likely to be very bad for us.
While our genes would be most benefitted by having as many children as
we can support into adulthood, Dawkins writes:
"It is a simple logical truth that, short of mass emigration into
space, with rockets taking off at the rate of several million per
second, uncontrolled birth-rates are bound to lead to horribly
increased death-rates. It is hard to believe that this simple truth is
not understood by those leaders who forbid their followers to use
effective contraceptive methods. They express a preference for
'natural' methods of population limitation, and a natural method is
exactly what they are going to get. It is called starvation." (The
Selfish Gene, 30th Anniversary edition, p. 111)
So, in short, no. I would not hold Dawkins responsible for somebody
taking away ideas he specifically denounces from his books.
