ELLICOTT CITY, MD
Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the trial of an
inmate accused of murdering a correctional officer
during an escape from a hospital in Hagerstown.
Prosecutors contend 22-year-old Brandon Morris
shot and killed officer Jeffery Wroten as part of a
premeditated escape plan.
Afterward, Morris allegedly took a hospital visitor
briefly hostage, robbed a taxicab driver at gunpoint
and forced a cabbie to drive him away before the
taxi crashed and he was captured.
The trial was moved to Howard County Circuit Court,
where Morris tried to escape during jury selection.
County Sheriff James Fitzgerald says they are stepping
up security with a stun device around Morris' waist
and shackles on his feet and additional deputies
on hand.
He says a skirt around the table will block jurors'
view of the belt and shackles

A former Hampden County prison guard has been
sentenced to up to three years behind bars for having
consensual sex with a female prisoner, while another
guard has been placed on probation.
Thirty-5-year-old Stanford Norman was sentenced to
serve two to three years in prison after being convicted
of having sex with the inmate while he was corrections
officer at the Hampden County Correctional Center in
Ludlow.
Another former guard, 53-year-old Brian Murphy, was
given two years probation. Prosecutors say Murphy
called the inmate to the facility's medical unit so Norman
could have sex with her.
A 1999 state law says any sexual contact between guards
and inmates is a felony. Both men were convicted last
month.
Attorneys for Norman and Murphy say they'll
appeal the jury verdicts.

Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or
high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism
does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It
undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts
sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it
helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it
reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
