Dollars' Former Pastor Reacts to Couple's Arrest
The couple accused of torturing and starving five adopted
children are now in jail in Utah, waiting to be extradited
back to Florida.
John and Linda Dollar, who once lived in Knox County and
operated a private christian school here, were arrested Friday
night in San Juan County, Utah.
Authorities found the two after tracing their cell phone signals.
Deputies say once they found the Dollars' vehicle, they quickly
surrounded it and took the two into custody.
Sgt. Kelly Bradford with the San Juan County Sheriff's Department
says, "When we pulled them over, we jumped out and went
immediately to their vehicle. We didn't know what kind of state
of mind they were in or what the danger was or anything so we
rapidly approached their vehicle and got them out of their
vehicle and had them in custody, and we didn't want to talk to
them to be honest."
The Dollars are accused of torturing five of their children with
electric shocks, beating them with hammers, and pulling their
toe-nails out with pliers.
Meanwhile, we're learning more about the dollars and their ties
to East Tennessee.
On Saturday, Volunteer TV's Corrina Collins spoke to the pastor
of the east Knox County church the couple attended when the two
lived in our area.
Pastor Bruce Martin of Mount Harmony Baptist Church knew John and
Linda Dollar fairly well. He says, "It's appalling to think
that we could know someone connected with this kind of alleged
abuse."
The Dollar's went to Mount Harmony for less than a year- Pastor
Martin says their attendance was inconsisent.... He says the
couple asked for help from the church when they started a private
school. "We wouldn't financially support the school and I think
they wanted more intimate involvement in the school they
started," says Martin.
Still, the pastor says the Dollar's children seemed to be well
adjusted, "Two of them I baptized- very sweet children- always
showed me respect."
He says word of their alleged abuse is heart breaking, "The
stress of what these children have gone through- my heart goes
out to them- I'd go out there and pick them up and help them in
some way."
While the Dollars may no longer live in our area, members of
their former church are praying for the children's physical and
emotional healing.
Volunteer TV's Chloe Morroni has reaction from some people who
knew the Dollars and brings us their story.
"I'm not surprised because that's what i thought," that's
Charlotte Swaggerty's reaction to seeing Linda and John Dollars
pictures on the news, wanted on felony charges of aggravated
child abuse.
"I feel really bad because I didn't do more," adds Swaggerty.
The Dollars owned and operated a private school in an East Knox
County House in 2000 called Mountain View Christian Academy.
Charlotte lives right next door. She says before the school
opened she went to meet the family. Charlotte says she took some
chicken to the kids and got a bad feeling, "they were hungry,
very hungry. They were thanking me over and over again wanting
to go with me."
Michelle and David Hoskins' son attended the Dollars' school.
"What more could you ask for in a home environment, it seemed
like a perfect situation," says Michelle Hoskins.
They say the dollars seemed like very nice people.
"I can't believe these two people would ever do anything like
that, it's totally shocking," adds Michelle. The Hoskins tell us
their son never had any problems at the school.
"There were no bad experiences. We never suspected anything was
going on," says David Hoskins.
They Hoskins say they knew the children the dollars are accused
of abusing.
"They were just perfect children, they never seemed to be in
distress," David adds.
But now those seemingly perfect children have a long road to
recovery ahead.
Records show the dollars lived in Knox County from 1995 to 2001
after living in the Kodak area of Sevier County.
They only had the school for about a year.
