Snorkeler shot after being mistaken for rodent
Man held for shooting says he thought snorkeler in Ore. river was a
nutria
Updated: 12:07 a.m. ET Feb. 11, 2007
EUGENE, Ore. - A snorkeler who was shot in the head after he was
apparently mistaken for a swimming rodent was in good condition after
surgery, a hospital said Saturday.
John William Cheesman, 44, of Springfield, underwent eight hours of
surgery Thursday to remove shrapnel and bone fragments from his face,
said his wife, Shelley Cheesman.
“He’s doing really well,” Shelley Cheesman said. “The bullet hit in
front of his right ear, where the bone is the most dense. It just
fragmented and didn’t go into his brain.”
He was listed in good condition at Oregon Health & Science University
Hospital in Portland.
William Roderick, 60, of Reedsport, has been charged with assault, being
a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine
and marijuana. He was being held in the county jail.
Roderick told deputies he thought Cheesman was a nutria swimming in the
Smith River near Reedsport, about 90 miles southwest of Eugene, and shot
him with a .22-caliber rifle, police said.
Cheesman, an avid diver, was in the river looking at different species
of fish, his wife said. He swam to the shore and yelled for help.
Roderick and another man came to his aid in a boat, called 911 and drove
Cheesman to an ambulance.
“I do give him credit for helping him,” Shelley Cheesman said of
Roderick.

Note to Floyd. If you use a snorkel it absolutely should have a brightly
colored tip.
Looking for and finding a diver with a black hood and black snorkel much
beyond 40 feet or so, in the sun, in blue water can be a problem. The
colored tip makes a huge difference.
I've never seen a nutria swim but from the back a seals head and divers head
can look a lot alike under ideal conditions.

I wouldn't rule out a commercial fisherman thinking he was shooting a
seal, not a rodent. They use seals for target practice all the time out
her on the Left Coast. They think seals are Al-Qaeda agents or something!

Last summer, I saw a guy in Florida who had a small diver down flag on
a float connected to his ankle (much like the lanyard on a
surfboard).

I remember them from trips to the parents' homeland (SW Louisiana).
IIRC, they look a lot like beavers.

I kind of doubt that you had too many snorkelers diving in your back yard
pond. It does tend to make a difference.

Better to buy a dayglo orange brain for anyone shooting into a river.
O once laid out a pattern of over 200 flares to divert traffic to an
exit ramp at the scene of an overturned vehicle. At night. (I still
had afterimages the next morning.)
A moron came through the flare field (a few hundred feet) with a few
lit flares hanging from the underside of his car, stopped near me and
asked, "Officer, what happened here?" He was not on drugs, his BAC was
very low and he was what passes for sane and rational these days.
Never trust anyone over the age of 6 weeks with your life.
