Snowboarder Says He Prayed While Lost
DENVER -- His rescuers credited snowboarder John Ryan with doing all the
right things to survive three days lost in the mountains outside a ski
resort area, but he doubts he would have made it through another night.
"I did a lot of praying up there, praying that I would see my family again,"
Ryan, 31, said Sunday in a telephone interview from his bed at the
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. "I had no idea exactly where
I was."

I'm sure many of the people who didn't get saved after becoming
lost in the woods also prayed. Were they wrong?

Snowboarder Says He Prayed While Lost

----
He used pine boughs to build a snow fort for shelter. More snow fell over
the next two days and temperatures fell into the low teens, and he didn't
have the energy to try to wade through the snow.
On Friday, he heard snowmobiles and sirens in the distance, and saw a search
helicopter.
Saturday morning, he tried walking out again but only made it 20 feet before
returning to his fort. He heard nothing and feared rescuers had given up on
him.
"I didn't know the length of time someone could live (in such conditions).
So I didn't know if they would give up."
Later Saturday, he heard shouts and he called out.
"We were just skiing down and happened upon him," Benjamin Yolda told the
Daily Times-Call of Longmont. "He was happy to see us. I thought a tree had
fallen on him, because he had popped his head out from all these branches."
----
Sounds like a real dufus. Also sounds like he was saved by a couple of
skiers. Imagine that, being saved by skiers on a ski mountain - it's a
miracle!

Yup, if not for them, all he'd have would be his prayers, and his death.

Not discounting divine inspiration necessarily, but Mr. Ryan apparently
followed the adage that "God helps those who help themselves."

True. I was hoping that being an outdoorsman, he would have had some kind
of ancillary training in basic survival skills or first aid.

And most Christians believe that after you die in *this* life, you go
on to an *afterlife*, heaven if you believe in Jesus, hell if you
don't. So if the guy was a good Christian, why was he so worried about
dying in *this* life? Supposedly, he is all set for heaven, right?

Pure speculation. There is no mention in the article of which god he
prayed to, or that he tried more than one god.

Why would you think he did?

Brings to mind the old story:
Old Jed was apprised that a flood was coming by the local sheriff.
Old Jed said that he would just stay there and God would save him.
The water got up to the bottom of the windows and a couple of Guys in a
Rowboat offered to save him..But no ..He said..God will save me.
The water got up to the roof line and a coastGuard cutter offerd to take
him off..But no...God would save old Jed. The water got to the peak of
the roof and a Helicopter tried to get him to leave..But again no: God
would save him.. Well old Jed drowned...And when he stood before God..He
asked why did you not save me.. I am a true believer. God looked
perplexed and answered... I sent the Sheriff, A rowboat, a CoastGuard
cutter and a Helicopter... What more did you want me to do? ;-)
