As some of you might be able to guess based upon the subject
matter, I recently bought & watched the movie "White Noise".
Suspending disbelief as one must if they are ever to enjoy any fiction
at all, I found it to be an eerie movie with plenty of dramatic
"startle" scenes and really enjoyed their use of this fictitious
phenomenon.
Or _is_ it a "fictitious phenomenon"? Well depending on how
you mean it, it might be or it might not be. There is a phenomenon
that actually occurs that is considered to be EVP. Is it actually
contact with some "other", a slot of meaningfulness inserted into the
random chaos of white noise by some otherworldly countenance? For my
own part, I really rather doubt it.
One aspect of the film that annoyed me is their description of
EVP as "scientific", irksome was their labeling as "scientific
research" what amounts to people playing an audio-visual Rorschach
Test with cameras and microphones.
Still, some of the recordings and imagery to be produced by
those who pursue this phenomenon are quite interesting. Search for it
on the 'net, some of the recordings sound every bit like human speech.
Of course for all of them I've heard, the "humanesqueness" of the
sounds comes only after massive post-processing of the sound wave.
Yet they _are_ intriguing. So in that vain, I'm beginning to pursue
this phenomenon myself.
What I'm trying to do is to create EVP recordings and look for
fragments and words and the like that can be glued together to form an
audio-reading of "Moby *****", significant parts of it at least. Why
"Moby *****"? Because it was used in pretty much the same way to
debunk "Bible codes". If anyone is feeling up to the challenge of
sifting bits & pieces of "Moby *****" out of a bunch of white noise,
I'd be quite appreciative if you'd send them my way. It would be in
the interest of officially debunking the attribution of supernatural
or paranormal qualities to the EVP. Finding something similar in
visual white noise would also be appreciated.
As for the phenomenon itself, do you suppose it could actually
work if there really were such things as ghosts? I mean for it to
happen, there would have to be some type of verifiable psychic ability
in existence (telekinesis in particular). We've never been able to
validate the notion that natural human minds can affect matter without
using their bodies or any mechanical/technological means. So if EVP
_is_ some sort of "otherworldly communique", then ghosts of humans
have psychic abilities we don't appear to possess as living beings,
and one would have to wonder why.
Anywho, just wanted to share this. If you are interested in
participating in this "search for Moby *****" <G>, feel free to drop me
a line at "shroyerw at munged bellsouth munged dot net". Delete the
spaces and the two occurrences of the word "munged" for my addy.
Meanwhile, c'est tout. Merci! :-)
