So What Comes After Religion Finally Goes Away? |
Jason Rosenhouse at www.scienceblogs.com/evolutionblog has a spirited
discussion going on about what would replace religion when people
finally wise up to its vacuity, and whether anything actually needs to
replace it:
http://tinyurl.com/2v7pjz
It seems to me that once the majority of people are rationale and
educated properly, particularly with regard to the sciences, we're not
actually going to need any "philosophical framework"
And religion won't be missed for anything except the belly-laughs we
all got from it.

Unfortunately there are *always* going to be people who believe in the
preposterous, the absurd -- and *plenty* of them. And like many a present
day religious fanatic they'll want to kill the unbeliever (or at least
savagely torture them) with as much gusto as any Islamic extremist or
Inquisition or Salem Witch Trial stripe of 'Christian' you'd care to think
of. These future hate-mongers will also insist that their religion is the
*True* religion and their 'God' or set of 'gods' the 'True' God or set of
gods. And if you insist on proof from these future deluded, ignorant,
made-up religion adherents, be prepared to hear: 'Well you *prove* it
*ISN'T* true, you EVIL bastards!!!' and not be given *anything* in the way
of credible proof any of it is true. So goes the religious mind.

I believe you're right. Something like the discovery of life elsewhere and
perhaps of a form far older than the oldest life forms on this planet of
ours will dispel any thoughts about how 'special' we are supposed to be and
why man will have found/discovered alien life and not a 'God'.

I am sure, it will take a long time before religion will go away,

Whether it will take five billion years until the sun turn red-giant
is questionable. The estimate I used to hear was four billion. But I
fear it has only been calculated that a star its size will burn 8 to
10 billion years before it reaches a point where the helium level
becomes to high for "normal operations" I also fear the current age is
set about half-way supposing the sun did not start burning long before
the formation of the earth. But whether there is observational data to
support that estimate. I have never heard much about it.
But I guess from a human viewpoint 5 bilion is about as much as half a
billion.
Amyway however long it takes, stupidity might survive.
Your presumption that only the theists display stupidity in this
Newsgroup is a mistake, I think.
I myself have been called stupid by more than one atheist.
Either I was or they were. . . .
The fact that intelligent people are more often atheists than our more
mediocre friends, shouldn't be misinterpreted.
More intelligence might lead to more atheism,
but more atheism might not lead to more intelligence.

Yeah, it's entirely questionable as to where we'll be (the race, that
is, not you & I!) in even a million years let alone an order of
magnitude beyond that. Wikipedia gives 4 -5 billion years:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun#Life_cycle
so I guess they're not sure!
I was going to the www.badastronomy.com web site to check, but it
seems to be down right now.
Amyway however long it takes, stupidity might survive.
Your presumption that only the theists display stupidity in this
Newsgroup is a mistake, I think.
I know we atheists once in a while goof up or say something dumb, but
we sure don't do it as consistently or as enthusiastically as the
theists who come here do! And most of us have the decency to admit to
our mistakes once they're pointed out
I myself have been called stupid by more than one atheist.
Either I was or they were. . . .
Sometimes it's hard to tell! I hope it wasn't me who did that. I
know we sometimes disagree, but I don't think of you as stupid by any
means.
The fact that intelligent people are more often atheists than our more
mediocre friends, shouldn't be misinterpreted.
More intelligence might lead to more atheism,

Now *there* would be a worthy topic for a thread!

God, Satan, what's the difference? In my reading of the Bible, Satan
comes off rather better than God. He gives us knowledge where God wants
perpetual ignorance. And it isn't Satan that torments His most devout
follower on a bet. That's God. Satan doesn't command rape, incest, or
slavery. He doesn't order the stoning of children, the desertion of
family, and he doesn't kill fig trees for bearing fruit only in season.
I challenge you, Dook, to find a passage in the Bible where Satan commits
an act or orders an act comparable to the slaughter of all the
inhabitants of a city but the virgin females, sparing them only them to
gang rape them.
Come on, Dook. Show me your Bible knowledge.

God, Satan, what's the difference? In my reading of the Bible, Satan
comes off rather better than God. He gives us knowledge where God wants
perpetual ignorance. And it isn't Satan that torments His most devout

I challenge you, Dook, to find a passage in the Bible where Satan commits

Well I'm reading on and I see Duck & Run has predictably avoided
dealing with your evidence from the Bible that his god is a mass
murderer and is reponsible for more dead babies than all the
abortionists in the rest of the world throughout history.
And as usual, instead of admitting that he was wrong, and his god
(according to myth) did indeed deliberately and wantonly slaughter
innocent people, Duck & Run tried to justify it be tarring everyone
who died - men, women, children, babies - with the same asinine brush!
I've tried to get him to address his "pre-history" weasel excuse
repeatedly and he just runs away. He claims Genesis ch 1- 11 are
prehistory, but he has never once found the intellectual wherewithal
to try and justify why that is or to directly address the Biblical
genealogy which is (so the Bible tells us) complete and uninterrupted
from creation through Jesus and completely gives the lie to his "pre-
history" claims if you buy into the Bible fairy tales.
Good luck with ever trying to pin him down on anything!

God never murdered anyone, dud.

You'll get used to it, Duke.
God, Satan, what's the difference? In my reading of the Bible, Satan
comes off rather better than God. He gives us knowledge where God
wants perpetual ignorance. And it isn't Satan that torments His most
devout follower on a bet. That's God. Satan doesn't command rape,
incest, or slavery. He doesn't order the stoning of children, the
desertion of family, and he doesn't kill fig trees for bearing fruit
only in season.
I challenge you, Dook, to find a passage in the Bible where Satan
commits an act or orders an act comparable to the slaughter of all the
inhabitants of a city but the virgin females, sparing them only them
to gang rape them.
God, himself, never ordered such acts.
Come on, Dook. Show me your Bible knowledge.
Done.

Nice one, Enkidu. I just read his (as usual) vacuous and thoroughly
dishonest response and was going to slam him on it, but I can't do
better than what you've provided here.
Clearly he either doesn't have a clue what his beloved Bible states,
or he's a liar. I'd bet he's both! Now here's another chance for him
to engage in rational and supported discussion. Let's see what he
does, shall we?
