Scientists have begun a multi-million-pound attempt to untangle the

Lycopersicon?
A wolf's peach?
Odd name for a tomato.
I wonder where they got off calling it that.

According to
http://www.hort.wisc.edu/mastergardener/Features/vegetables/tomatoes/
tomorigin/tomato%20origin.htm
(URL is wrapped),
Linnaeus named the tomato "lycopersicon" because it was recognizably
related to the deadly nightshade, Atropus belladonna, and nightshade
was believed to be used by witches to conjure werewolves. They also
claim that the German name for "tomato" translates to "wolf peach";
I wish they had said exactly which German word they have in mind,
because I'm pretty sure "Tomate" isn't it.
