The first silver English florin (two shilling piece) issued in 1849, was
popularly known as the "Graceless" or "Godless" florin, because it did not
carry the traditional inscriptions "Dei Gratia" - By God's Grace - and
"Fidei Defensor" - Defender of the Faith. A virulent cholera epidemic in
that year was widely blamed on the evil influence of the florin, which had
to be withdrawn. The Master of the Mint, a Roman Catholic, resigned under
public pressure.
And they wonder why many of us think you have to be a little insane to be a
theist.
