OK, and an all powerful God couldn't just say "stop, itys no longer
needed"? You are acting like there was some higher law that even your
God was forced to follow. Look at your wording... sacrifices that
were required, and the only way to stop them was another sacrifice?
In a sense, that's what he did. Because Jesus *WAS* God and he offered
himself as a gift to be accepted by mankind as a way toward salvation.
Sorry, but an all powerful ruler of the universe needs to get tortured
to change the rules? That makes no sense whatsoever. None at all.
sorry, doesn't work.
Works for me.
Do you believe in Santa Claus too?
An all-powerful deity would have no need for such a gesture. Simply
saying "you're forgiven, for I have said so" would be enough.
You are only forgiven if you accept the "gift" of his sacrifice.
Ah. The abusive partner motif shows up again.. "I love you
unconditionally, unless of course you break my rules, in which case
I'll beat the crap out of you.
Your god has the ethics of an abusive parent.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16 ESV
OK, so you can quote a book. Very nice. Here, I can do it too.
Matthew 10:21 "And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death,
and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their
parents, and cause them to be put to death."
Matthew 10:37 "He that loveth father or mother more than me is not
worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not
worthy of me."
Egotisitcal cult leader. David Koresh, Jim Jones, all the great crazy
cult leaders told their followers the same thing "cut yourself off
from your families, love only me." This Jesus person is just as bad.
Notice how many places he gets thrown out of in the Gospels?
So, if this is the case, why do Christians mourn? Why do they fight
death? I would think being diagnosed with terminal cancewr would
cause someone with your world view to sing and dance in the streets!
After all, that diagnosis means that you'll be in Heaven soon, right?
And within an eye blink, all yopur loved ones will join you?
Please explain why Christians mourn, and treat funerals as sad
occasions, please.
Not all Christians treat funerals as sad occasions. Many are quite
joyous celebrations of lives lived to the fullest. But you are right
that many are quite sad, but that should not be the the way it should
be! It is natural and human to mourn, but it should be seen more as an
"until I see you again" rather than a "goodbye forever!" People in my
family cry at funerals for the same reason that they cry at the airport.
Sorry, the only joyful funerals I've ever been to are for pagans and
atheists. Every Christian ceremony I've been to has been dreary,
depressing, and frankly dull.
I can't speak for all Christians, I can only speak for the ones that I
know. None that I know fear death, but none will rush toward it
needlessly either. I am sure that I will go in the Lord's good time,
and there is nothing that I can do to change it.
I've been in two wars, survived cancer, and am an atheist. I don't
fear death either, even though I expect that will be the end of me as
an entity. You comfort yourself with stories (that you can't prove)
that you'll somehow be rewarded by the Abusive Parent in the Sky.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed
substance;
in your book were written, every
one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there were none
of them.
So, you don't believe in free will then? We're just puppets, acting
out the script that your God preordained? If that is the case, the
concept of eternal punishment is doubly evil. If all my actions were
already recorded before I was born, I had no say in them. My decision
to have a Coke just now was not mine, but something a deity had
decided on long ago.
Pretty sick world view there.
If my view of the universe turns out to be 100% wrong, I have lost
nothing, but I have gained peace and happiness here on earth for myself
and my family and many other friends. Hopefully I have helped others
along the way both through charitable giving, good works and through
mentorship. I'll never know. . . I guess that death will just be the
end. . . Just like turning off a light. Right?
If my view of the universe is right. . .
Ah, Pascal's wager.
OK, let me ask you a few questions, what if..
The Muslims are right?
The Hindus are right?
The Buddhists are right?
The Jews are right?
The Wiccans are right?
The Asaratu (followers of the Old Norse Gods) are right?
The Ancient Egyptians were right?
A tiny tribe in the upper reaches of the Amazon are the only people
with the correct religion?

FWIW, shortboarders tend to be rather more messianic than longboarders.
But I appreciate your point.

I wonder why there was "a need for constant sacrifice". Who needed
it? It certainly could not have been an omnipotent god.

Correct. It would, however, be needed by an omni-impotent god.

I agree 100%. Yeah, no *****. I do. Really. That is the thought every
person oughta have in their heart. Substitute Christ for Buddha or
Allah or Jehovah, whatever. Get with God. Save the dolphins. Save the
pandas. Save the cats. Blah blah blah. Kill all the stupid and vicious
people painlessly. Start over. Because if all the stupid people died,
there's only be a few thousand left.
If there was a god, he would have killed all the wrong people
already. There is no God. But you have to believe in God anyway,
because he's all we have. Get that? Hello? It's called common sense and
decency, it will help you. Give me a grand, so I can start the Church

Not if He's as described in the Old Testament.
But he is also described in the New Testament and it would indicate that he
would be above that.
Surely the bible wouldn't conflict itself?

Well, that depends on if you use the OT or not. I, myself, consider
both Old and New Testaments simply stories designed to keep the riffraff
at bay with threats of ultimate punishment for misdeeds.
Personally, I take as much stock in the Bible as I do "Harry Potter."

It's not supposed to work that way though... If you're only "behaving"
because you're afraid of the consequences, you're really no more than a
dog that's been trained not to pee on the rug, lest you get a newspaper
across the nose.
