What do you mean it's not 'supposed' to work that way? Of course it is.
Why invent hell except as a threat to bad little boys?
Humans are still animals. It's pain and the threat of pain that makes
them act against their nature. Sure they'll eventually convince
themselves that it's what they want (and indeed it will be what they
want), because they're too proud to admit that they are doing anything
less than their own will.
Frankly, even if I don't agree with the Christers that go shouting

God is Omnipotent (that means "all powerful") and Omniscient (that
means "all seeing") so why does he need his ego stroked by pitiful
little mortal worshipers?
Doesn't it seem that an all powerful, all seeing entity would be above
such mortal failings as the ego stroke? I mean, I'm only human and I
don't give a rats ***** what you think about me one way or the other.
Why does God insist he be worshipped?

Well if we are speaking biblically, that was man's original intention on
Earth, to worship God. So it is not as if (biblically speaking) the "stroke
the ego" thing you refer to is an afterthought but rather the original
intent of man's creation (biblically speaking).

The point being... "If God is all powerful and all knowing why create
an inferior race for the sole purpose of being worshipped?"
The fundies make it sound like God is sitting around and goes "Hey, I'm
kind of bored, I wish I had millions of people praying to me." POOF!
There's no reason for a supreme being to seek out worshippers. At
least, supreme being secure in their superiority. It fails the smell
