Someone Using Port |
Someone is using one of the ports on my computer.
This slows down my receipt of regular e-mail. Is
there any way I can get rid of them?

From your message header it appears that you're using Windows.
If it's just a port scanner, you can try configuring the Windows
firewall. Open the Windows Firewall configuration in the Control Panel,
go to the Advanced Settings page, and on the "ICMP" tab, make sure that
all the "allow incoming" and "allow outgoing" items are unchecked.
If that doesn't stop the unwanted traffic, it might be something more
serious, like a malware infestation. A couple of freebie malware scanners
which I have used are AdAware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware
and "Spybot Search and Destroy",
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
I currently use the AVG Internet Security package:
http://www.grisoft.com/. That includes a much more robust firewall
product as well as the malware and virus scanners.

I agree. I currently use ZoneAlarm in addition to the firewall that my
router provides. I have AdAware and AVG's virus scanner to remove
spyware weekly. You wouldn't believe the amount of junk is on your
computer.

There are internet security programs. I use Intego for the Mac, but I'm
sure that there are comparable ones for PCs.

Depending on what version of Windows you are using, Right Click on My
Network Places / Neighborhood and select Properties. Right Click on your
LAN connection, should read something like Local Area Connection 1 or
some other number, and select Properties. Click on the Advanced Tab,
then the Settings Button. Make sure your Windows FireWall is turned on
and that the check box for Don't Allow Exceptions is selected. Go to
the Exceptions tab and uncheck everything. Click the Advanced tab, and
select the first Settings button. Make sure everything is unchecked in
both tabs. Select the third Settings button on the Advanced tab and
uncheck everything for the time being.
Now Ok out of the Windows. You don't have to reboot your machine. Now,
when you start using your e-mail or web browser again, you should be
prompted that you are attempting to bypass your fire wall. Select
Unblock for the activities you want. If your are not sure what
something is, then select Keep Blocking, or what ever the hell the other
option is.
Fred Stone included this information as well as some links to some very
good SpyWare, Adware killers. If you don't have them, get them and run
them. They work really well. Also, I would include two others.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Use this after running any of the spy/ad ware killer software. Also, if
you uninstall software from your system, run this. It catches things
that standard uninstall programs don't. It also has a very nice
registry cleaner, much better then the one in SpyBot Search and Destroy.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
This program immunizes your system against Spy and Ad ware crap. You
run it, then exit out of it. It sets up blocks in IE, FireFox and text
systems as well as blocks for your registry.
SpyBot has a really cool tool called TeaTimer. It runs as a service in
your icon tray and checks when software is being installed to your
system that changes your registry. I have used it for a while and have
caught web sites trying to install stuff several times. If you use
FireFox, which I recommend, makes sure the "Let remote sites install
software" option is set to not allow it.
Sorry for the long response Michelle, but this is exactly what I do for
a living and I hate leaving out details.
Good luck. :-)

Install a firewall, better still use a router with a hardware
firewall.

Do you know which port?
Are you using a firewall?
Do you use a wireless router?
Is it encrypted?
