Something I got in my e-mail |
The Bush Administration on finding Osama Bin Laden in Central Asia:
"We're going to hunt them down one at a time... it doesn't matter where
they hide, as we work with our friends we will find them and bring them to
justice."
- President George W. Bush, 11/22/02
The Bush Administration on finding Saddam Hussein in the Mideast:
"We are continuing the pursuit and it's a matter of time before [Saddam]
is found and brought to justice."
- White House spokesman McClellan, 9/17/03
The Bush Administration on finding the leaker in the close confines of the
White House:
"I don't know if we're going to find out the senior administration
official. I don't have any idea... This is a large administration, and
there are a lot of senior administration officials."
- President George W. Bush, 10/7/03

On the other hand, Hussein and bin Laden both have a lot more ground in
which to hide, whereas the identities and locations of everyone who
potentially could have leaked that information are well known, and there
are detailed records of phone calls, e-mails, etc. to search. (Although I
hear the White House, for what reason I can't possibly imagine, asked the
Justice Department to wait one day before issuing an order that no
information was to be destroyed.)

Assuming that it wasn't common knowledge already, which has yet to be

They were called *after* Novak's original column appeared.
None of them were "offered" the information in the form of a deliberate
leak. Novak says it came up in passing when he specifically asked why
Wilson was chosen. (Meet the Press)

Fred, the point is that the administration seems strangely reluctant
to pledge even a minimal effort. After all the bombast given towards
tracking down ObL and SH, trying to root out a leak among a few dozen
senior administration officers should at least be given a little
priority.

He didn't show any such hesitancy when speaking about whether we'd catch
bin Laden or Hussein - yet the former has apparently vanished from sight
(and from the administration's speeches) for well over a year now, and the
latter hasn't been seen in several months. That *was* the point of the

Considering that he's pledged to find not one, but two needles in

from his own administration does not seem so damn hard.

No, I want the administration to actually dedicate itsedlf to finding
someone who has committed a felony, and then supporting the
prosecution of that person to the fullest extent of the law. If that
is too much to ask, then I am very happy that we will have the
oportunity to remove this demagog from power.

Justice? Has *anyone* been "brought to justice" yet? A lot of people
have been disappeared, either put into those holes in Guantanamo and
left to rot while someone figures out how to "try" them, or they've been
sent to secret places for "questioning" that will probably last for
decades.
Funny ideas about "justice," if you ask me.
