something more powerful |
It seems to me that it is obvious that I am not more powerful than the
world around me. So I would say that which is not me is a higher power.
There are the laws of physics that need to be enforced. So there must
be a force that enforces the laws. This idea that there is some guy in
the clouds watching you and interacting is an easy to understand visual
representation of the idea that the universe you live in is watching
you and interacting with you. The guy in the clouds does things to you
based on your actions; therefore one must take responsibility for ones
own life. So a good person must understand what the guy in the clouds
wants how he reacts to different things that one does and so forth. The
Universe around us reacts based on our actions as well. So a successful
person must to some degree understand what their own goals are and how
the universe around them will react to different inputs it gives the
universe. How you represent the higher power I feel is a matter of
intellect. The smarter a person or society gets the more you can
abstract it from a very understandable band of people on the top of a
mountain to what have you. But I feel that it is undeniable that there
is something more powerful than me and more powerful than everyone
reading this.

It all sounds very similar to the ideas I've heard from several
Christians going through a 'doubting phase'. There's a tendency to
believe in an abstract general spirit or guiding force, and view all
ideas of god as simply ways of relating to it. Some of them went on to
become atheists or agnostics, while others became even more devout
Christians than they were before. But almost all dropped the name
"Christian" (or used it very hesitantly) during such a phase.
Obviously, I could be way off the mark. She could be of any number of
religions, but just playing the odds I can guess Christian.
On the other hand, perhaps it was a bit rash to make such a statement,
as I've also known people that believe some wild, and most likely
heretical, ***** and still call themselves Christians.

It depends what you mean more powerful. As a human being you're part of
a force that has in many ways reshaped the world and will probably do
so, to some degree or another, until the end of our species.
So I would say that which is not me is a higher power.
Ok. Seems a bit like a handwaving segue, but ok.
There are the laws of physics that need to be enforced. So there must

In the immortal words of Christopher A Lee, don't be so fucking stupid.
You're playing a very unsubtle word game. Do you really think anybody's
going to fall for that?
A physical law is a generalization of observable phenomenon. If they
can be said to be enforced, they are self-enforcing.
This idea that there is some guy in the clouds watching you and
interacting is an easy to understand visual representation of the idea
that the universe you live in is watching you and interacting with you.
The universe is watching you? What gives you that impression?
The guy in the clouds does things to you based on your actions; therefore
one must take responsibility for ones own life. So a good person must
understand what the guy in the clouds wants how he reacts to different
things that one does and so forth.
Have you considered the varied pleasures that using the comma would
provide? Such as being able to read your sentences in one go.
The Universe around us reacts based on our actions as well.
So you're an animist? Or a pantheist? I don't quite understand, but I'm
pretty sure you're just adding needless complexity to your world.
So a successful person must to some degree understand what their
own goals are and how the universe around them will react to
different inputs it gives the universe. How you represent the higher
power I feel is a matter of intellect. The smarter a person or society
gets the more you can abstract it from a very understandable band
of people on the top of a mountain to what have you.
So you've grown up enough to realize that there is no flying Voldemort
and his hippy son. Great. Why not shed the superstition altogether?
What rational cause do you have to believe as you do?
But I feel that it is undeniable that there is something more powerful
than me and more powerful than everyone reading this.
What if the universe is reading this? Or maybe one of the physical law
enforcement officers?
What are you trying to do here? If you're just looking to explain your
religious stance, I don't know why you bothered. It seems to consist of
some word games and adding a mystery god to drive the forces of nature.
If you're here to proselytize, please move along. We don't want your
kind here.

Semantic error. Word magic. You think if you can call something by a
word which also has another definition, you can sneak in some of the
stuff from the other definition and nobody will notice. An electric
generator up on a hill is a "higher power". Now get all mystical about
that.
"Laws" and "rules" in physics are descriptions not edicts. A description
of a verifiable constant relationship between two or more observable
properties or events. Seems to me the "enforcement" is right there in
the definition. Something not verifiable or constant or observable isn't
"enforced".

I would never have come up with such a bizarre concept on my own. I only
know of it due to other people who have been yammering about it all of
my life as if they know something I don't. All inquery and investigation
has clearly demonstrated that they do not.
The Universe around us reacts based on our actions as well. So a
successful person must to some degree understand what their own goals
are and how the universe around them will react to different inputs it
gives the universe.
This is a big DUH. The universe (no caps) changes due to things that
happen in it. Wow! A "successful" person must know that unsupported
objects will fall and fire burns. Let's be all mysterioso about it!
How you represent the higher power I feel is a matter of
intellect. The smarter a person or society gets the more you can
abstract it from a very understandable band of people on the top of a
mountain to what have you.
Huh? Is this just your way of phrasing the old "science is just another
form of religion" yarn?
I pity people who think life is so complicated, so hard to understand,
that it requires all this "abstracting" to make sense. Maybe you people
should just try taking things as they appear for a while, instead of
squinting and juggling to interpret signs and portents for some deeper
meaning.
But I feel that it is undeniable that there
is something more powerful than me and more powerful than everyone
reading this.
And you're trying very hard not to accidentally blurt out that you think
it is an intelligent conscious life-giving entity with an interest in
humans. The attraction of which is not simply being a higher power but
of being someone capable of taking up the slack in your life, to make up
for your own failings (or the failings you pecieve in others). All you
gotta do is find out what he wants and then you can't fail in life. And
countless other puny humans are more than happy to tell you...about a
million different answers to that...all unquestionable...because they
come from a source "higher" than you.
Why have I written a sizeable reply here, when most others have simply
given you the standard "get lost, drive-by preacher"? I dunno. I guess
by the tone of your post you struck me as possibly being on the verge of
questioning your beliefs and I want to encourage that. Try taking life
at face value for a while. When you are supplied with rules from on
high, or signs to interpret, quietly ask yourself if you can really find
any actual reason. If you really are an intelligent person I think
you'll find the answer is often 'no'.

In alt.atheism On 2 Jan 2006 18:25:23 -0800, let
us all know that:
It seems to me that it is obvious that I am not more powerful than the
world around me. So I would say that which is not me is a higher power.
There are the laws of physics that need to be enforced.
No.
But you're a troll.

Okay, pull over. Yes, you driver! You were exceeding the speed of
light. 186,000 miles per second, that's the law.
This idea that there is some guy in
the clouds watching you and interacting is an easy to understand visual
representation of the idea that the universe you live in is watching
you and interacting with you.
Paranoia, paranoia, paranoia . . . ha, ha, ha . . . I bet you don't
realize what punishment 'some guy in the clouds'® imposes for
exceeding the speed of light. Spaghettification!
The guy in the clouds does things to you
based on your actions; therefore one must take responsibility for ones
own life.
Sure, if you don't want to be spaghettified.
You're right about that. You want to know what is more powerful than
you? Gravity. That's right, gravity. If you don't believe me, then
just try and jump yourself into a low Earth orbit. In the meantime,
drop and give me fifty, mister. You'll find out just how powerful
gravity is, and it isn't even the strong force.
