Donovan Jones, the former Dayton Avenue church deacon, who is at the
centre of the sexual molestation offence against a 14-year-old
Corporate Area schoolgirl, yesterday had his stay in jail extended
until September 8.
Mr. Jones, 46, was ordered remanded by Resident Magistrate Desiree
Alleyne, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's
Court. His co-accused, 18-year-old James Rodgers, was granted bail in
the sum of $500, 000 with two sureties.

First let's define our terms. "Clerical pedophilia" isn't more
of a problem than it is with any other random group of
adults -- *except* in religions that don't allow their clergy
to marry. And by far the most notable of these is the RCC.
Do you know why the RCC doesn't allow their priests to
marry? It's got absolutely nothing to do with sacrifice or
chastity or the apostles or any of the other ***** they're
so fond of spouting. They don't allow their priests to marry
because they don't want to financially support the wives
and kids of priests. In light of what's now known about
human sexuality, and what happens when this most basic
of all human needs is repressed, the church's refusal to
allow voluntary celibacy instead of mandatory is nothing
short of immoral.
As a direct result, the RCC is far and away the biggest
organized group of pedophiles in the world today and has
been for centuries. And this problem continues to exist
primarily because of the church's hierarchy, which
systematically and consistently shields priests from civil
and criminal prosecution for these crimes. Recent RCC
rhetoric notwithstanding, nothing has changed: pedophile
priests are simply reassigned to other places, they're not
prosecuted.

Your original comment claimed that clergymen were treated differently
than EVERYONE ELSE. But David's comment does not support that. ANY
person "in a position or trust and/or authority over the child" is
liable to the same degree. That would include teachers, school
principals, policemen, doctors, nurses, or parents, among others.

well that when he says "position of authority", he means adults who
are given such authority implicitly by the child's parents or by
societal custom.

children that adults generally deemed trustworthy -- eg. doctors,

teenage girl or a young teenage boy. That's a power imbalance but it
has nothing to do with being entrusted with the care of the girl in
question or with the girl being expected to follow his advice or
instructions. If the two are strangers no such expectations exist
regardless of whether the adult has more "power" whether it's physical
or just the effect of greater psychological maturity. But when a
teacher molests a student, or parents ask a family friend to drive
their daughter somewhere and he takes advantage of being alone with
her, or a rabbi takes advantage of his position as religious
counselor, or of course when an elder family member does it then that
is not merely a power imbalance. It's a dereliction of your

I understand what you're saying but...why is it exploitation?
Again I ask the Big Question that so far eludes all wise men in the
solar system: What is so magical about sex? Why is it assumed to be
