PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A federal judge on Friday sentenced a
self-styled natural healer who faked his medical credentials to 12
years in prison for lying to patients and charging them $1.4 million
for useless treatments. John Curran of Exeter was convicted in May of
21 counts of fraud and money laundering.
During a two-week trial, prosecutors said Curran looked at his
patients' blood under a microscope and claimed they had parasites,
reduced red blood cell counts or ruined immune systems. He falsely
claimed to have cured a patient of cancer. The U.S. Attorney's office
said Curran sold "E-Water," which he claimed had the same healing
power as water drawn from a Catholic shrine in France.
