Priest who attacked abortion clinic moves to Elgin

ROCKFORD - A priest who put Rockford in the national spotlight back in
2000 when he attacked the city's lone abortion clinic with an ax is
now working a little bit closer to the Forest City.

Earl was arrested in Sept. 30, 2000, in Rockford and charged with two
counts of criminal damage to property. He admitted crashing his car
into a garage door at the Northern Illinois Women's Clinic, 1400
Broadway, and forcing his way through the building that houses the
clinic and other businesses.


Earl was stopped before entering the clinic by building owner Wayne
Webster, who fired two warning shots and forced the priest to drop the
ax he used to break doors, windows and surveillance cameras.


Earl, who was serving as pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Rochelle at
the time of the attack, pleaded guilty Feb. 14, 2001, and was
sentenced to 30 months of probation and ordered to pay $7,664 in fines
and restitution.


"Father Earl has paid for the crime, and the Catholic Church has seen
fit to assign him to a parish for certain duties," Wiegert said. "He's
not a pastor at this point."
