A VICAR begged a court to show mercy on his former churchwarden who
swindled £91,000 from taxpayers.
Hugh Ellis asked JPs to give Geraldine Lavis a suspended sentence
after she admitted falsely claiming housing and council tax benefits.
He said: "God disciplines those he loves."
But South Somerset JPs ignored his pleas and sent Lavis, of Long
Sutton, to be sentenced at Taunton Crown Court.
And they warned the 56-year-old married teacher she faces up to seven
years in jail.
