DETROIT — A Detroit teen convicted of shooting a gay Windsor, Ontario,
man in the head was sentenced Aug. 8 to eight to 12 years in prison,
according to the Windsor Star newspaper. Steven Williams Jr., 18, was
found guilty in late July of assaulting Salvagio Vonatti with intent
to commit great bodily harm, and guilty of possessing a firearm in the
commission of a felony. The two charges combined normally carry a
maximum sentence of 12 years. Williams will receive credit for 193
days he has served since his arrest after the January incident,
according to the Aug. 9 story. Vonatti remains alive but in critical
condition. In his sentencing, Judge David Allen emphasized that the
shooting was a hate crime motivated by Vonatti’s sexual orientation.
But Allen said there are no Michigan laws to reflect that fact in
sentencing. Allen said he would have handed down a stiffer sentence if
the law allowed it.
