Four people accused of beating an 18-year-old gay man in Edgewood on
July 30 were indicted Friday on hate-crime charges. A grand jury
charged Cecily Gonzales, Leroy Segura, Uriah Smith and William York
with kidnapping, aggravated battery, conspiracy and false
imprisonment. An additional year of prison time can be imposed if a
jury finds a defendant was motivated to commit a felony because of the
victim’s characteristics, such as sexual orientation or race.
