EDMONTON (CP) - A Sudanese pastor has been sentenced to nine years in
prison for an attack in which his former wife feared she'd be
beheaded.
Gabriel Deng Degieudit pounced on Doruka Machot in the bedroom of her
apartment when she refused to talk about a possible reconciliation.
He punched her on the head and upper body, then stabbed her several
times.
At one point, he stuck his fingers in her mouth and drew back her head
so he could saw at the side of her neck.
Machot testified she was afraid he was trying to cut off her head.
The pair had met in an African refugee camp where Degieudit was a
pastor who taught Bible studies.
Degieudit pleaded guilty to attempted murder, uttering threats and
forcible confinement.
